I'm running arch on a Toshiba satelite, and my desktop environment is xfce4.
Last time I updated the kernel via pacman, after I rebooted I noticed that the power display icon in the corner was gone. So, I did an `ls /proc/acpi` and sure enough, there was nothing related to power in there.
However, I changed the settings on the applet to always display even when no battery is present, and since that time, whenever I start up, for as long as the computer is running it will display the battery level and power status as they were when I first started -- for instance, right now, even though it's been plugged in for an hour, it still says my battery is at a 3% charge and that it will take 1 hour and 47 minutes to finish charging.
This indicates to me that the power information exists but disappears at some point in the boot process after the display has been started, but I can't figure out when.
Any advice on how to track this down and fix it?
Thanks!
solved with update.

Instead of /proc/acpi, you should check /sys/class/power_supply.

Hmm... Yes, it turns out that exists after all.
All of the files in there seem to have information that makes sense, except for /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/status, which says "Unknown"
Not sure if this is a problem with that, or if it's a problem with the power applet...

Well, I think you should go by what is in that directory since that is reporting what the kernel knows.
As far as the "unknown" status, I would suggest trying the LTS kernel and see if the status fixes itself. Then at least you can at least attribute the issue to either the kernel or your firmware going wonky.

It's a upower issue, not the kernel
