PPTPD Server serious speed issues

I have 2 servers, both running PPTPD server with the same configuration, one running ARCH Linux, the other running Ubuntu Server.

setup was done step by step according to this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PPTP_Server

I am connecting to both servers, from the same client using the same settings, the UBU server speed is fine, the ARCH is incredibly slow and is completely unusable, sometimes even unable to fully load a web page.

Both servers have good bandwidth (~ 3M/sec) when testing from a console on the server.

When I connect to the UBU from a client, the bandwidth is OK, but when connecting to the ARCH server, the bandwidth is virtually nothing at all.

Ping from the client to an external host shows similar response times when connected to either server, however download speed is probably in bytes per second, it is INCREDIBLY slow.

I have spent 2 days trying to track this down, I have uninstalled, and re-installed several times, I have tried all kinds of configuration settings, nothing seems to make any difference whatsoever !

Any suggestions ?

Re: PPTPD Server serious speed issues

Start a tcpdump session on both machines and have a look at the interval they receive packets from their clients, and possibly tell you (using icmp) what is wrong. Have you tested the connection to the server itself from a client btw? Using rsync or scp should result in equal speeds, just to rule out any other network issues.

Re: PPTPD Server serious speed issues

@spider.007 - thanks for the suggestions. I just did a scp test from both servers just to eliminate that one, the arch server is actually on average about 10% faster than the ubuntu server.

I've not used tcp dump before, need to figure that one out.

Re: PPTPD Server serious speed issues

tcpdump allows you to see the actual network-packets on the wire; which might allow you to debug this better. If you're more comfortable with a gui you could try wireshark (on the client) listening to your pptp0 interface
