my hard drive failed (luckily backed it up) but that's not why I'm here...
About 6 months ago I was able to download the necessary packages with wifi-menu and use the wifi of iwl3945. now while installing, it appears to be loading, but when I tried wifi-menu, it didn't work. I have the following message when doing the following command : dmesg | grep firmware.
iwl3945 000:04:00:0 loaded firmware version 15.32.2.9 .
I then type iw dev to get the interface for the wireless and type
ip link set wlp4s0 up.
No errors.
I then try wifi menu get the bunch of ssid to look through and choose the one I know the paraphrase to. I pushed enter through the name for the new profile. type my passphrase. Do I want to keep it in the system, yes.
Job for netctl@wlp4s0\x[insert my ssid here].service failed.
I go to check that particular system status.
is says it loaded but inactive.
Or do I have to go all the way back to january's install and install it that way. I mean, it use to be that I could do all this without any issues back in january. Now it doesn't seem to work for me.

This is just the install, so you can skip wifi-menu/netctl altogether, set up your net connection manually, and complete the installation.
Once you have a full system, you can then decide which network utility you would like to use, netctl being just one of various choices available.

right, but the issue I am finding is that wifi-menu worked in january's edition, but doesn't work now. And by manually, you mean plug it into the wall or do wpa_supplicant?

okay got it to connect to my router using wpa_supplicant. thanks tomk
