[Workaround]: Grfx stay in foreground/switching desktop/applications.

I have a hard time (regretably) to come up with the best way to describe it (which is also why google haven't been my trusty friend this time)

The issue:

For about a month or two, there has been an issue with graphical apps (like wine, xscreen-saver (run manually) and others,
which makes them cover the screen unitl killed. Meaning that if i switch from them, to another desktop or application like lxterminal,
i do not see lxterminal or what i switched to, since the previous graphical application stays in the foreground.

Most notably i see this when running a fullscreen game through wine (using GL) in one desktop, as is my custom, and trying to switch to the desktop containing a fullscreen lxterminal.
I have to kill the wine-session, or xscreensaver app, in able to view anything else again.

Information:

My usual, daily, usecase is that i have 4 desktops, an IM-program started on the first, firefox on the second, a terminal on the third and the fourth free to my daily whims.

I am using the official nvidia drivers, on a geforce gtx570, i run openbox (as stated above) and no graphical login manager.
Furthermore i lack polkit, upower and any udisks program (if that might matter any),
other then that i have no special "mumbo jumbo", and i keep updated daily.

Is there a bug or regression in either the nvidia-drivers, openbox, xorg or somewhere that i might have missed?

Any hints toward the right direction would be welcome.

Re: [Workaround]: Grfx stay in foreground/switching desktop/applications.

It is the same today, and another example of where it happens;

smplayer, in openbox, playing a video (gl2 output), switching desktop , the video does not go away and covers the foreground until i find my way back to smplayer and minimizes or stops it.
a little like hardware accel flash used to do with nvidia.

No one else having this behaviour?, in openbox or otherwise, and where did this go wrong? (it was not like this before).

Weird. Nope, no problem here. Are you sure you didnt change something in the rc.xml? Are you running a compositor like compton?

Same behaviour with mplayer her. Switching desktops in plain openbox (no compositor) keeps the graphics on display with only the desktop switch dialog visible. No idea, however, when this started, as I didn't use mplayer this way since several weeks.

Edit: This occurs in fullscreen mode only.

I should note that while I dont have this problem, Im running the latest Openbox-git from the AUR. There was a bug with Smart Placement that pushed me to build from git, but nothing like what you say. Have you tried something like PekWM or Fluxbox just to see if it has anything to do with Openbox (considering how stable OB is, I really doubt it.. I dont think its even been updated in a while)? If not, its something wrong with the programs being used. If so, try building the git version of OB and see if that fixes your problems.

I will try out something entirerly else too, but it do happen in for instance both wine (fullscreen desktop) and smplayer,
and i suppose what they have in common (in my case) is GL output. Will attempt to look further into this, thanks for the feedback thus far,
both of you smile

(Oh, and i do not use an compositor either no)

Status-update: Workaround.

Currently using a compositor (compton-git from aur) as a workaround, as per my post here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1418277

eigengrau,
I saw your reports and your post above.   You may have a point, but I am going to leave the threads as separate entities.   They may be the same root cause, but the symptoms were varied.  I think that merging them would create a difficult to follow mess.  I think the best solution is to cross link the threads as you have done above.

Thanks ewaller, I think the crosslinks will do the job as well.

I have created a thread on the NVIDIA forums. It would be appreciated if affected users could describe their set-up there.

Ah yeah, i did not really find a totally matching scenario in my search of other topics (or containing more general explanations - i.e they seem more app-specific those at a glance)
So i agree with ewaller too.

Anyways thanks for the nvidia thread eigengrau, i will absolutely check in there aswell!
