After exiting X there is gibberish

Sometimes when I quit x all the lower case characters turn to gibberish.  (The uppercase text is still recognizeable though.)  I can type and my commands are understood but the console shows a bunch of blocks, down arrows, and other symbols instead of the alphabet.

Any idea why this happens?  I've seen it regardless of which WM I use (e17 or Fluxbox)

Re: After exiting X there is gibberish

I think I am using the vesafb for console.. here is my boot line in menu.lst:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/sda3 ro video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70 splash=slient,theme:darch console=tty1 resume2=swap:/dev/sda2 quiet acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode

No.. I have an Intel i915 chipset which uses the i810 driver.
