Re: Macbook Air 2013

@brainwave - (First of all thank you for your contributable spirit.  I'd like to toss in my 2 cents if I may to play the devil's advocate in writing persoanlized post install setup into the MBA 2013 install wiki)

You could write your post-install setup into a blog post.  I don't think it would fit in the wiki as it is personalized to you.  I wrote my post-install setup in my blog as well since it is personalized to me, however, i do see that it has helped quite a few people.  You would need to write your reasons why you chose some of your options and caution users of each choice and how it would affect them.  As your choices are personalized to you, it may cause errors for someone else.  For example, noatime will not work for my email app mutt.  Mutt users are to use relatime.  My fstab (which has been untouched for 6 months) is rw,relatime, discard, data=ordered and I do not see the extensive writing to disk that you experience. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fs … me_options

As for the loading profiles in ram, you should look up graysky's repo/contribution and check out some of his packages as I think you will greatly enjoy them. https://github.com/graysky2/profile-sync-daemon

There is also, "sync anything" that he did if I remember correctly that can sync a wider ranger.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

@frank604 : Nicely framed post! I did not find your blog, while searching for help regarding my macbook air. I missed it I guess! Very nice blog. I am following it one by one, and implementing things post install that I haven't done. I have these reservations and suggestions, though -

The libata.force=1:noncq options, does it do 'any' bad to the SSD? You seemed really confident regarding that.

Secondly, the thing about touch gestures - After disabling 3 finger on synaptic driver, you can use touchegg to recreate 3 finger, 4 finger gestures from Mac OS, and also get '5' finger gestures! It's superb, you can get tens of gestures. Check it out.

3 Finger motions 'do' work, as in synaptic driver can detect them fine. It is only that nothing is done with those 3 finger motions, that is drag isn't configured.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

@brainwave, We used to force libata to turn off ncq to bypass an ATA bug with our MBA 2013.  Since 3.14 (I think) we no longer have to pass this argument.  I haven't updated my post since (sorries!).  I've never really ventered into multi touch features but when I have the urge I'll check it out, thanks!

Could you also tell what parameters you pass to your kernel when booting? If you use refind then there will be a refind_linux.conf file where you would pass boot parameters to your kernel right? Also, is it a custom kernel compilation or the standard kernel that comes with arch?

I do not have any of these! I boot with root=/dev/sda5, (I also do not have encrypted partition, so for you that needs to stay).
What I am curious about is your pcie_aspm flag. As per my knowledge, pcie_aspm=force enables pcie for devices that do not support pcie_aspm. If hardware is unable to do it, this flag can cause errors. Could you try just removing this option and reboot?
(If you haven't tried already).

I am a newbie to Linux, while I gathered that you have been here for long long time. So in case this is something irrelevant/wrong, or you have already tried, then advance apologies!

EDIT
The second thing which leads me to suspect the pcie_aspm flag is the computer booting fine with a USB stick. Maybe that somehow disables the part of ASPM kernel is trying to do that is causing an error.

Are you using arch on MBA as your primary OS? Or is it just once in a while? Reason I am asking is, I wanted to know from someone using arch for long time on MBA if he/she ran into any issues.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

@brainwave, Arch is the only thing installed on my MBA (I don't dual-boot with mac osx and my other blog post shows how to to an Arch Only install if you are interested).  I bought the MBA in Dec 2013.  I use windows at work but my personal desktop/laptops all run arch.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

So I have this issue of backlight suspend that according to this thread is fixed by using a kernel module that takes the control of the backlight from intel backlight. I was wondering if it is safe or bad for the hardware in any way?

Did any of the users face issue with thunderbolt display on arch?

Also, on arch,  did any of you configure the intel video driver ? (I am talking about 20-intel.conf)

What acceleration option is to be used? (Asking because smooth scrolling on my firefox is a little jittery, the top of webpage has a small relative motion with the bottom of the webpage. This is seen as a line (miniature break in text) that travels from top to bottom of the page as I scroll up. Disabling hardware acceleration in firefox seems to reduce the issue a little.

What post installation configuration is to be done for powersaving features? What battery life are users getting on arch?

Nope, changing those flags did not work. I did notice a pattern though: if I powerdown via "shutdown" it boots fine the next tmie. If I use the power key, it does not. It may have just been a coincidence though, and the issue might be something else. Has anybody else had this issue? Turning it off before putting in your disk decryption password is pretty safe (eg: nothing mounted RW, so nothing breaks).

I didn't. I all worked out of the box (I installed in september 2013). It should still do so.

Sorry, I should have documented this.I barely recall what I did, but I get 11-12hs when doing light work (python programming, IM, ~100 firefox tabs across several windows). That does down to about 6hs when running stuff like eclipse, and to 3-5hs when playing games like Portal 2 or Eve Online.

I haven't faced this issue. I can power on fine, on kernel 3.15.1.

What do you mean by "bad ffor the hardware"? o.O

Since it directly takes control of the backlight chip from intel drivers, is it safe to use it?

No. What are you trying to do?

I am planning to buy a thunderbolt display for my mac. But according to [url [tag=https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=181589]this thread[/tag]there seems to be an issue with macbook Air + Thunderbolt display. But the OP of the thread used an apple thunderbolt. Wanted to determine if the issue was only with an apple thunderbolt display or any other maker's thunderbolt display too. Hence wanted to know if any of the users here used a thunderbolt display without issues on Macbook Air. (Sometimes 'logically should work' isn't good enough ;-) )

I would have been grateful to you if you would have! As of now, I am utterly confused regarding powersaving. I am not using pm-utils. I think it leads to issues, with the hardware. For one, hard disk get's put in max performance mode after resume, and a journalctl -f shows an endless stream of continuous messages from the ATA controller.

I am also not using laptop-mode tools as it is no longer in official repos. I am using tlp as of now. But I am unable to find out how to configure it, there are just too many modules.

So end result - lost. If any user here remembers even somewhat about power saving configuration, even slightly, it would be a big help.

I also haven't been able to find a solution for the arbitrary system freezes that are occurring during random times. That is mostly because I not know which logs to look like on a normal system. I cannot isolate the reason for the freeze.

P.S
Somewhere up on this thread, someone mentioned why is the PCIe hard disk detected as ATA. That is because the controller provides an ATA interface over PCIe connections.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

Firstly, I notice that you use the deadline scheduler in your config. Is there any reason to prefer it over NOOP?
Secondly,

Under the condition of -

  • booting with gnome-shell and guake running (no additional processes launched after boot)

  • guake running

  • unplugging the adapter

sudo tlp-stat -b

Shows me power consumption of around 6-7 Watts. Is this figure (under same or equivalent conditions) any different for you?
Or just let me know a figure under some standard condition, I will recreate it at my end and compare.

According to the debian wiki (https://wiki.debian.org/SSDOptimization):
"The dumb "noop" scheduler may be a little faster in benchmarks that max out the throughput, but this scheduler causes noticeable delays for other tasks while large file transfers are in progress."

Booting unplugged with just bspwm and urxvt, power consumption is 5-6 W depending on brightness according to powertop.

The numbers on the left go from 1->2767, each taking 30 seconds, making jump of 5. That long, my pc cannot reboot, cannot use usb devices. After that the link is up again and everything works.

I tried removing asix module with modprobe -r, but that also doesn't work throughout the process.

Curiously, powertop also doesn't work until this get's over. I think it is because system daemons are getting blocked. Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT : I saw the ethernet device's name being changed by systemd, after which this issue started. I have now written a udev rule giving this asix usb->ethernet a permanent name. So far, in 12 hours, this problem has not occured. I will post again if it occurs.

EDIT2 : It occured again. Looks like a kernel bug, but it has been on bug reports since as old as kernel 2.6. Not kernel specific then. Hopeless case. No ethernet for me, then. Phone tether works flawless though. I am guessing it's asix hardware that's causing it.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

The ability to resume only on full brightness -> is it an applesmc bug? Can someone work with me to solve this bug? The thing is that the normal brightness first comes, then the screen drops to 0. So I am guessing that the apple-smc is a problem? The intel-backlight driver is merely that - a driver. I think applesmc is telling it to got to 0 brightness. Is it because of the non working pcie camera?

@frank604 : Did you do any changing of the keyboard mapping on the air to make it feel better/more convinient?

This has been discussed in this thread a few times already. You need to install mba6x_bl-dkms.

kbdlight (disclaimer: written by myself) adjusts the keyboard backlight brightness.

The pcie webcam is completely unrelated.

That would strongly depend on you definition of convenient. What's wrong with it as it is?

I changed the default seting to have the f* keys work as f* key, and fn+f* as brighness, volume, etc:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/athena-keyboard.conf
options hid_apple fnmode=2

This is what I was talking about. Is it perfectly safe to use it? A bug in the intel backlight driver should ideally be corrected by a patch to the driver. Taking over control of the backlight seems a little - 'wierd'!

Thanks for this one.

A lot of things! For one, no page up and page down. Lots of others. If any of you had a working xmodmap that I could change and use, I would have (just lazy, sorry tongue ). Guess I will have to do one myself then. Shouldn't be difficult, just tedious.

I changed the default seting to have the f* keys work as f* key, and fn+f* as brighness, volume, etc:

This even I did.

Warning -> Pointless rambling ahead, nothing important below this.

So many issues, sigh. Gnome freezes (hasn't frozen in a while but every time I write this, it does :-/ ). I cannot user my asix ethernet-> usb without issues after latest kernel upgrade. Backlight doesn't work bugfree with intel driver. Firefox smooth scroll, evince, all has a jitter in part of the text during scroll, xbacklight -dec <certain values> make screen brightness go to 0, pcie camera is unsupported, SATA link management spams journalctl on full power, link going continually up and down. And lack of page up/page down and other standard keys on the keyboard, my Synaptic driver configs don't bring the touchpad experience as close to mac, despite me having put so many options in it. I just can't seem to tweak the many parameters to give a good feel.

This is getting really tiring. Never thought issues will be so many, despite this much help from this thread. I wonder how those who chose to use arch as only OS got around to all this. Respect for you guys.

And beware, such issues are not just with the Air. In fact, most issues are less on the air. New ultrabook hardware by other vendors also is leading to many many issues. UEFI, aspm, etc. Each of these technologies, have drawn only a 'it's biggest crap I have ever seen' from Linux Torvalds (wiki his quotes). From IRC or from the forums, help is usually from only the users of the same make/model. The general IRC crowd on #archlinux (best channel so far i have been on) also scoffs. Issues like the one I am facing with asix usb-ethernet invoke 'usb->ethernet? That's crapware'. There is an entire thread on thunderbolt problems on the mac.

Linux is simply not ready for this genre of laptops.

I know this last 2 paragraphs were against the arch way, and I am not saying it's anyone's fault. I still spend hours trying to smoothen out these issues, I just keep facing new ones. And I wish I knew how to debug and sort them. So want to get to the stage of using my laptop, on arch without feeling threatened of something else going wrong in next 15 minutes. WiFi (instability), SSD (I posted earlier), System Freeze, Ethernet (asix), LCD Brightness, Thunderbolt, GPU (text tearing), Camera, and users before me had sound etc.  What part of the hardware is left?!!

Seriously regretting not knowing Linux better, to sort out all these without this much frustration.

Try fn+arrow keys. That's pg up, pg down, home and end.

I don't use gnome, so I can's speak for that. I used the above driver for backlight. Can't reproduce the firefox issue you mention (I just tried enabling smooth scrolling just to try that).
If you want lots of multitouch support on your trackpad, there's a separate drive you can use. I don't care much about these features, so I don't use it and can't recall the specifics, but I do know you need to search for "mtrack". Personally, this is all I use. Regrettably I did not document that at  all, so I've no idea why I use those setings.

As for USB->Ethernet, I actually got the Thunderbolt adapter with mine, so I've no experience in that area.

I've had no issues with wifi, thudenderbolt, gpu or sound (with kernels from the last few months). The lack of camera sucks. I never really use webcams, but it still sucks. I'm rather confused that you're getting so many issues. Maybe they updated the hardware at some point?

Re: Macbook Air 2013

@hobarrera - Multitouch options I configured OK. Touchpad experience, I am tweaking, will get there someday, I am sure.

Firefox issues - I stopped using smooth scroll, helping the issue greatly.

Fn+arrow keys works, just that earlier page down was my default way of browsing web pages. However, that's something I should have looked into 'before' buying hardware. I don't regret it though. The hardware is great indeed. I am trying to remap the Command And Option keys on the right hand side, to page up and down. (Xmodmap isn't working yet, those keys still act as modifiers). Home and End I use rarely, so Fn+Arrow key combination is fine.

Power issues are smooth now, using 5-6 watts consistently.

The system freezes have stopped after latest kernel upgrade. Haven't happened since then be it gnome or on i3.

Asix issue is just that - crapware asix I guess.

WiFi instability was there initially. I think it was in my powersaving settings that something was causing the problem. The interface kept trying to interchange itself. Now it's fine, I didn't have to change it.

I just got a little carried away during my rant I guess. Sorry. Maybe I should edit and remove it altogether.

Regarding touchpad config - this is my synaptics config . I haven't even gotten to palm detection yet tongue

I doubt that they modified the hardware between your and my purchase.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

Upon installing the mba6x_backlight module, on boot my brightness goes to 0. This could be because I (foolishly) commented out two lines from a script that was reading values from my firmware, and setting them in software (so I believe). It had a lot of files in the directory it was present in. It had good comments also. like #do this, #do that etc.
It had a long list of things in it, it looked like it was loading various things, one by one. I do not remember this file. This script was a system script. Any help?

I've no idea what script it is, but you could grep through `pacman -Qkk` to find it.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

I found it, it was in /usr/lib/udev/99-systemd.rules

However, even after reverting it to as it was, i have the issue. I have 0 brightness on each boot. I have to increase brightness after logging in blind. What could be the issue?

So far, I installed the mba6x_backlight module with pacman -U

Reanalyzing it, the brightness actually works initially, drops to 0 just before I get the tty. Going to other tty also gives me 0 brightness.

Re: Macbook Air 2013

Regarding power saving, I think all I did was install powerdown, and add "elevator=noop" to the kernel line in /boot/refind_linux.conf.

Nope, changing those flags did not work. I did notice a pattern though: if I powerdown via "shutdown" it boots fine the next time. If I use the power key, it does not. It may have just been a coincidence though, and the issue might be something else. Has anybody else had this issue? Turning it off before putting in your disk decryption password is pretty safe (eg: nothing mounted RW, so nothing breaks).

I haven't faced this issue. I can power on fine, on kernel 3.15.1.

The issue is only reproducible if I previously powered off via the power button. (maybe the /boot partition is not properly unmounted??).
