[SOLVED] KDE desktop black after upgrade of mesa and intel-dri

Since I updated (-Syu) today (made no update for about a week) I had a black screen (with mouse cursor) after login (via KDM) into KDE. I use a Intel 855GM graphics (driver: SNA compiled from 2.99.911-114-g94e3932).  I first suspected that  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=182423 is related, but apparently it is not.

Some of my observations with KDE 4.13.2:
* black screen with correct mouse cursor after login (loading animation appears correctly)
* alt+f2 (krunner) brings the desktop content back but only until a program is started (then parts get black again)
* Ctrl+Esc brings up the process viewer, but only with partly non-black window decoration.
* the log-off menu does not appear (only the screen dims) after right clicking the desktop → log-off.
* it only happens with active "desctop effects" (transparency, shadows, ...)

No issues observed in Openbox or TWM.

Workaround: Downgrade those packages.

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/mesa-10.1.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/mesa-libgl-10.1.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/intel-dri-10.1.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz

results in those log file entries:
>   [2014-06-11 02:57] [PACMAN] downgraded mesa (10.2.1-1 -> 10.1.4-1)
>   [2014-06-11 02:57] [PACMAN] downgraded mesa-libgl (10.2.1-1 -> 10.1.4-1)
>   [2014-06-11 02:57] [PACMAN] downgraded intel-dri (10.2.1-1 -> 10.1.4-1)

Somebody else with this problem or hints? Or is it due to the SNA driver (waiting for the new  2.99.912 which is currently in testing)?

Re: [SOLVED] KDE desktop black after upgrade of mesa and intel-dri

FWIW I'm running LXQt with KWin (on Glamor / OpenGL v3) via SDDM on a Radeon card (7950) and while SDDM starts fine, trying to log in to any desktop flavour whether it was KDE, LXQt or Openbox fails, reverting back to the SDDM login display.

Downgrading ati-dri and mesa resolves the problem.

For now I've just added the packages to the ignore list in pacman.conf as I couldn't find any clues to the problem in logs or X/Kwin configs. The next step would be to use strace on startx to learn more though I'm waiting for smarter people than me to figure this one out as it's not my area of expertise.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE desktop black after upgrade of mesa and intel-dri

Thank you, esdaniel! Interesting. However, those are different symtoms (no graphics errors but apparently some fatal error when a desktop environment is loaded).  The similar thing is that reverting the mesa package helps. Interesting that there also seems to be a problem with ATI graphics.  Your problem may be related to / same as https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/40781 which deals about segfaults with this new mesa package (but in VMs).

I am not sure how to proceed. Report it upstream against mesa? Seems like. I am only a bit confused that no other people seem to experience problems.

Update: I have reported it upstream https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80069

Re: [SOLVED] KDE desktop black after upgrade of mesa and intel-dri

My problem turned out to be a conflict wtih sddm-git. After disabling SDDM, killing X and then launching LXQt via startx brought me to the LXQt desktop thus verifying the issue albeit not providing much reason as to why.

Installing sddm-qt5-git solved the problem for me and I can now use SDDM to access LXQt.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE desktop black after upgrade of mesa and intel-dri

With the *new mesa version* the problem seems to not appear any more:

* mesa 10.2.2-1
* mesa-libgl 10.2.2-1
* intel-dri 10.2.2-1

and (same as before) xf86-video-intel 2.99.912-1.

Thank you, devs!
