Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi all,
I just installed catalys but when run startx or kdm startup backlight is off and I can not see the monitor. I tryed both packages and blob by AMD. Both values in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness and  /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness are 10. Xorg log and dmesg look like fine. I have an Asus notebook with AMD Radeon HD 6470M. Some ideas? Can someone help me in debug?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello, i need a little help.

I have an ATI RADEON HD 4870 and i use the repo catalyst-hd234k, in the last December i had played many hours to Kerbal Space Program and a month ago i have changed my HDD to an SSD and after the install of Arch Linux, KSP work anymore, i'm stuck on a black loading screen but i can hear that the game have finish to load, i have try all the solution that have been explain on  the KSP forum but no one work. There is one solution i haven't try : downgrade my catalyst packets.

Is it possible to find an old packet of that repo ?

I have try to use the opensource driver and with it, the game work (but i don't want to use it because of my old graphic card is at 80°C in idle with this driver and the fan is noisy).

Don't know if that can help, but this is my logs / configs :

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

EDIT: On a whim I was thinking that maybe the issue was with the display not matching perfectly between my desktop monitor (27" 1080P Asus) and my TV (40" 1080P Scepter) which is mirrored also. I noticed that the flickering wasn't happening on the TV. So I turned the TV off and the flickering stopped!! Anyone have any idea why? I'm going to assume it has something to do with refresh rates.

I have an odd problem that just popped up... I installed the Catalyst drivers a few days ago since I have 2 Radeon HD 7870s in Crossfire. Everything was fine up until a few hours ago that I noticed tearing in XBMC after messing with the advanced settings file and enabling hardware acceleration. At first I followed the VDPAU and VA-API guides for the catalyst drives. I installed libvdpau-va-gl and libva-xvba-driver, rebooted and then noticed that for some odd reason the Taskbar/SystemPanel in KDE started flickering constantly, like every second or two, more so when I was typing or it had the refresh the desktop because something was happening (typing, cursor blinking, text flowing through the console). What happens is like the taskbar goes down about a milimeter and then seems to come back up. Also when I open up the context menu in chrome it's all black until I mouse over it. I tried to record it with a screen recorder but surprisingly it doesn't show up, which confuses me. I tried to record it with my smartphone but it's being stupid and won't record videos for some reason.

I noticed that I didn't have the env variables set so I did that, no change. I removed those packages and went with the ones specified in the AMD Catalyst wiki page, which are xvba-video, mplayer-vaapi, and libva. Installed those and rebooted, still no change. I swapped out  xvba-video for libva-xvba-driver but once again, no difference. I even removed libva-xvba-driver but that didn't even help either! I tried to remove libva but avidemux-cli, ffmepg and plex-home-theater rely on it.

I'm using OpenGL 3 in KDE, fgl_glxgears runs fine. Here's the output of some stuff.

 [bran@ra ~]$ lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx                9168598  196
amd_iommu_v2            7302  1 fglrx
button                  4765  1 fglrx
 [bran@ra ~]$ fglrxinfo
display: :0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.4.12967 Compatibility Profile Context 14.20

How can I fix this without going to the OS driver?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey guys, if any of you has problem with kernels 3.15+ and dual graphics (freezing, dmesg spammed with "Link Down event ignored on slot(2): already powering off"), read this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1434054 and https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79701

EDIT: sorry, wrong thread... this happens only with the radeon open source driver.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,

Just for information with the last version of catalyst from Vi0l0 repo, chromium is not working anymore in addition to GDM, it just crash xorg (coredump) as soon as it launches
my system is up to date, kernel 3.14.12-1-lts or 3.15.5-1, hardware is nothing fancy ATI 5650.

Its working fine here on both KDE and GNOME3 - chromium 35.0.1916.153 (Build 274914) 64-bit @ 290X
Same goes for chromium-dev 37.0.2062.0 (Build 278856) 64-bit

Chromium works here. I never managed to get GDM3 to work with AMD Catalyst and never tried to fix it because GDM 2.2 and MDM are available.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

There is a new 14.6 beta update (tagged July 11th), but I don't know, what the difference is. There is no updated information.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello, i want to try the catalyst driver because with the open source driver my vga randomly crashes. But i can't boot up.
IT's a fresh new arch install with GDM and Cinnamon.
I installed catalyst by unofficial repository from Vi0L0's unofficial repository, i blacklisted radeon, added the module, disable kernel mode settings and created the right xorg with aticonfig --init. What am i missing?

VGA is an ati radeon 7950

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Guys there's xorg-server 1.16 in [testing] repo.

securitybreach wrote that it's working well for him with catalyst-test.
I'm not that lucky and getting "symbol lookup error <path_here>/libglx.so: undefined symbol: LoadExtension" while starting X. IgnoreABI didn't help.
fglrx_drv.so don't have symbols for 116, but it's still missing 114 ones, so i don't think it's reliable source.

Can someone confirm if it's working/not working? smile
Feel free to remove xorg-server deps from catalyst-test' PKGBUILD or disable dep check while updating.

Also I created xorg115 repo: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … st#xorg115

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I suppose the stable version (14.4) also needs xorg 1.15, right?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Oh how I wish the radeon driver could compete with catalyst when it comes to 3D acceleration and crossfire, but it can't. Yet.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have an old ATI Radeon HD 4770 and I´m using the catalyst-total-hd234k drivers. Before that update, everything worked well.
After yesterday´s update, the size of one of my screens has been resized (now it doesn´t fill the whole screen) and my system randomly boot properly or with a lot of errors (I have to restart it by hand because it hangs).

Normally I update my system everyday, so for sure it has been one of yesterday´s installed packages:

[2014-07-23 17:33] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2014-07-23 17:33] [PACMAN] synchronizing package lists
[2014-07-23 17:33] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded coreutils (8.22-4 -> 8.23-1)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded gcc-libs (4.9.0-5 -> 4.9.1-1)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded gcc (4.9.0-5 -> 4.9.1-1)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded kipi-plugins (4.0.0-1 -> 4.1.0-1)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded lib32-gcc-libs (4.9.0-5 -> 4.9.1-1)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded libltdl (2.4.2-13 -> 2.4.2-14)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded libtool (2.4.2-13 -> 2.4.2-14)
[2014-07-23 17:35] [PACMAN] upgraded thunderbird (24.6.0-1 -> 31.0-1)

Can it be that some dependencies are not anymore compatibles with the drivers? Maybe I´m just talking nonsense.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm trying to upgrade catalyst from 14.6-1 to 14.6-10, but now it seems to require gcc/gcc-libs? This causes issues, as i have gcc-[libs-]multilib installed. Was this an intentional change? If so, is there a way around it?

EDIT: Nevermind, it was actually related to libtool

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm trying to make catalyst-hd234k work on a Manjaro install. The video card is a HD4670. After ruling out the black screen issue described in the wiki by adding the nomodeset boot option I get stuck with the problem that has been already described in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101044 In short, when X tries to start the screen goes black and after some seconds the PC hard resets showing the message

A Hyper Transport sync flood error occurred on last boot.

Is this a hardware problem or can something be done to get the card working with Catalyst?

Please ask on the Manjaro forums.  They are the ones who know how their distribution works.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

ewaller, that's true, but on the other hand the packages by Vi0L0 are for Arch and this is the corresponding support thread. Unfortunately there is no analogous packages for Manjaro...

Doesn't change the point that Manjaro is a different system with an out-dated X stack, BFS as the default CPU scheduler and other settings (including different kernel configurations to the Arch kernel) which are different to those in a straight ArchLinux installation.

I would try building all the Catalyst packages yourself (there should be a Manjaro repository that holds old versions of the X server packages. Ask there.).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

PhotonX,
Thanks for the understanding and I understand your dilemma.  This is probably a good time to point out that we have nothing against other distributions and we wish them well.  We also welcome everyone to read and participate in these forums, regardless of the distribution they choose.  As moderators, one of our charters is to ensure that information posted on this site is unambiguous with regards to Arch Linux.  As clfarron4 points out, other forks of Arch do have significant differences that may be the root cause of issues.  As we are not experts in other distributions, that is why we have the Arch Linux only support policy.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I removed catalyst and installed radeonsi instead. I didn't expect much but wow, I get BETTER performance in source engine games at least (and unigine valley) than I did before. Only setback is opengl 3.3 support instead of full opengl 4.4 support. The free driver finally seems to come to par with the catalyst driver performance wise!

I should add I'm sporting an R9 280X with 3GB GDDR5 memory on a Tahiti core, so I have some safe-margin for bad drivers.

Source engine I get, because Valve and the Mesa guys did a really good job in getting a superb performance with open-source drivers in general, but even Unigine Valley? That's odd. There is partial OpenGL 4.x already in the drivers and 4.0/4.1/4.2 support by Mesa is nearlly finished.
