How to correctly file a kernel bug

I have a problem with Display Port that seems to be tightly related to the intel graphics driver. Now I want to file tis bug. But I don't know how to do this. What do I need for this and how/where can I tell the developers what my problem is?

The problem I have is described in this post.

Please feel free to correct my english.

Re: How to correctly file a kernel bug

  1. First step would be to make absolutely sure its a kernel bug ! You do not want Linus' wrath on you ;-)

  2. Once you are sure though, look up their bug tracker and make sure the bug isn't already opened. If not, you can create a new one and supply all the relevant info like debug logs, error logs etc.

  3. Wait for them to fix it

  4. Profit

Re: How to correctly file a kernel bug

I've submitted a kernel bug report before. As you can see, it was pretty much ignored, until eventually the regression was just kind of fixed.

Has your problem always been a bug or is it a regression? An easy way to test it is to boot into older live discs (such as older versions of Ubuntu) and see if it used to work. If you can pinpoint when the bug was introduced then you'll have a much better chance of getting it resolved. smile

Re: How to correctly file a kernel bug

If your problem is a regression I suppose that if you try to bisect and find the offending commit it will help in getting attention.

Re: How to correctly file a kernel bug

Unlike other kernel issues, bugs in the kernel gpu drivers should be reported on http://bugs.freedesktop.org. In your case Product DRI, Component DRM/Intel.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.
