Re: Install problems... already! [SOLVED]

is this a i686 system?
another problem i have had is memory in slots 2 or 3 while nothing in 0 or 1
there are rare cases where some distros just wont run on a particular machine
i got an ole compaq presario model 5uvme that will install arch on it but wont boot it will install alot of distros but wont boot them from harddrive
it isnt common but it does happen
and yes ive looked around the bios for disable boot antivirus or  whatever it is
i cant recall it exactly off the top of my head i know its worded other ways also
like what os is running on machine win9x or other

Perhaps you did not burn the cd as bootable?

It said "Cpu family: 5", that means it's a 586 CPU, ergo the default 686 arch wouldn't work

Re: Install problems... already! [SOLVED]

Ok. Yes, the cd is bootable.  Switched to a AMD Duron i686 processor and it starts.  Am currently mirroring my WinXP to the i586 box.  When done,  maybe 2 hrs, will restart install.  Thanks for all the input.

Am encouraged to see that this board is active enuf to get several replies in a few hours.  That was prob THE best thing about Gentoo, a great community effort.

Thanks again
