How to achieve this?

I really like the transparency. How do I do that? Is it only achievable with a certain window manager?

You need a composite manager.  Some Desktop Environments have them built in.   Stand alone Window Managers  need one of those in that first article I linked.

I use Compton under both i3 and Openbox
