Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello guys,
in my laptop I cannot upgrade the system because ATI driver requires xorg-server no more than 1.15.
How can I exclude this package and update the rest?

Thanks!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

That is actually Arch Linux basic knowledge, what you are asking for. For how to use Pacman, I recommend to read the Wiki article on Pacman. For the 1.15 problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ca … positories though you only can use that, after you know how to handle repos in Pacman.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

New catalyst versioned as 14.201-0ubuntu1 (prepared for Ubuntu 14.10) works fine on xorg-server 1.16.
It was a nice surprise to test it after getting back from work's traveling :-)

I tested:
games: dota2, l4d2, serious sam 2, civilization v, tf2
video: mplayer (vaapi), xbmc (xvba - latest xbmc version before xvba was dropped)
opengl benchs: heaven, valley
basic opencl apps

catalyst-test and catalyst-test-pxp @ AUR were already updated, soon I should update [catalyst] repo.
edit: ok, repo is now up to date, archive repo is called [catalyst-14.6-beta1-jul11]

cool, let me know what you come up with.

I think the problems in instability were caused by 3.17 rc kernel because it was happening only when I was compiling on a (tmpfs) ramdisk while watching vaapi videos. Gotta look closer at this, only three problems: its hard to reproduce, nothing in logs (i need to enable some hc loging in kernel) and I dont have much time these days sad

Thanks for the reply.  I'm just going to update everything (the downgrade didn't actually solve the problem) and hope that it's a regression upstream and that it will be fixed in a later version of the kernel.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I upgraded to the new catalyst version (I'm using the unofficial repositories) and I can confirm it's working with Xorg 1.14. I tried Xorg 1.15 and it didn't work, but I didn't get a log file.

With Xorg 1.16 it didn't work either. Here's the output of cat ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log:

Just in case the driver didn't get rebuilt, I ran catalyst_build_module and modprobe fglrx, but that didn't solve it either.

EDIT: my kernel version is 3.16.2-1-ARCH

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

With the new catalyst-test 14.9-10 my X screen hangs. The background is displayed, the mouse cursor is displayed but no keyboard-shortcuts work and the mouse won't move.
It does not do anything when pressing Ctrl+Print+K, Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/... but it reboots when using REISUB. So the keyboard itself seems to be recognised.

I am using openbox 3.5.2-6, linux 3.16.2-1, xorg-server 1.16.0-6. Previous I had forced to use the 1.15 xorg-server and the catalyst-test 14.6-12.
I was starting X with a simple "xinit" after logging in.
With 1.16 I have to use "xinit -- /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc" to start X on my netbook and on my desktop with the open source driver, otherwise no screens are found.
With the catalyst-test the simple "xinit" command seems to be enough - I did not try to add the xserverrc reference.

I tried to do a new "aticonfig --initial=dual-head" after removing the xorg.conf, but the result was the same.

With catalyst-test 14.9-10 the Xorg.0.log still is created at /var/log/ instead of .local/share/xorg/. With the open source driver it is created in the latter directory

.xinitrc:

#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

# keymap
setxkbmap de
# mouse acceleration
xset m 5/4 0
# notification-daemon

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@revberaldo:
looks like you got some pxp capable hadrware, don't you? pxp users noted that xorg-server 1.16 doesn't work for them. Probably becase the last intel driver which works for them is xf86-video-intel 2.99.910-1. I put this version into [xorg115] repo, check it out now.

With catalyst-test 14.9-10 the Xorg.0.log still is created at /var/log/ instead of .local/share/xorg/. With the open source driver it is created in the latter directory

Note that rootless X doesn't work on blobs.
If oss radeon was working well on 1.16, that most probably means that there's no problem with keyboard/mouse drivers (&& fglrx is messing some things).
Does this catalyst version work good for you on xserver 1.15? Can you check single monitor setup (maybe there's some multihead bug inside fglrx)?

Thanks! Unfortunately, that didn't work. I upgraded to Xorg 1.15 and, although X works when I change to the Intel card (pxp_switch_catalyst intel), it fails to load when I enable the ATI card. The card's a Radeon R7 M260 (my guess is it isn't supported as it's kind of recent). Here's my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello,

I have a hybrid graphics with both intel and radeon card supporting dynamic power management options. My discrete card is Radeon HD 8750m.

So far it's been nearly 2 years since I bought my laptop yet I'm unable to make my discrete card work with any driver no matter what I tried, Opensource / Closed source - Nothing works!

I've followed the steps in Arch wiki also posted a thread in Arch forums to resolve my issue but as of yet nothing fixed my issue.

Please, if you have the time / resources...I'd be grateful if you'd kindly look into my thread over here : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p1457230

I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to get this thing working, I paid a premium price for this laptop just because of the high end discrete card...and it's been a total waste so far.

Thanks,
Irenicus09

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@revberaldo:
how are you switching to amd?
Check this commands:

/usr/lib64/fglrx/switchlibGL query
/usr/lib64/fglrx/switchlibglx query
aticonfig --pxl

They will give you answers about which gpu is selected.

Edit: Omg, I assumed that you are using catalyst-test/catalyst-libgl, which also comes with experimental pxp support, and not direct - pxp packages (which I'm planning to drop btw)... Sorry for a possible mistake, let's clarify :
1. for "normal" catalyst packages with experimental pxp support like catalyst-test:

readlink /usr/lib/libGL.so
readlink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

For AMD(Catalyst) links should point to:

$ readlink /usr/lib/libGL.so
/usr/lib/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2
$ readlink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/fglrx/fglrx-libglx.so

2. for -pxp packages like catalyst-test-pxp, catalyst-total-pxp or catalyst-utils-pxp(repo):

readlink /usr/lib/catalystpxp/libGL.so.1.2
readlink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so

For AMD(Catalyst) links should point to:

$ readlink /usr/lib/catalystpxp/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib/catalystpxp/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2
$ readlink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/fglrx/fglrx-libglx.so

@irenicus09:
could you paste Xorg.0.log ?
Also your /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf is missing, it's better to cut fglrx from it when using intel than removing it (file)

Valve Begins Publicly Tracking AMD Catalyst Linux Issues

Hi Vi0L0,

Inexplicably, it's working now. I was changing my GPU with

pxp_switch_catalyst amd

. I rebooted my computer this morning, ran that command and now I'm using Gnome with my ATI card. The packages I have installed are:

$ pacman -Q | grep catalyst
catalyst-hook 14.9-10
catalyst-utils-pxp 14.9-10
lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 14.9-10

As for the symlinks (readlink didn't print the full path to the files, I read the man pages and there's nothing about that):

$ readlink /usr/lib/libGL.so
libGL.so.1.2.0
$ readlink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
libglx.xorg

I can see a lot of tearing and slowness when I move windows around in Gnome. The performance of Dota 2 is better than before, but I can notice some annoying "hiccups". It feels like frames are being skipped every few seconds. Here's a video of me moving a window around (look at the bottom left corner) and resizing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNUY5VhUE64

I tried enabling vsync in the Catalyst Control Center, but that option is greyed out.

Thanks for the help so far! I'll check out Valve's bugtracker, that's very cool!

tear + slowness? doesn't sound good...
Normally I would suggest:
- amdccle -> Tear Free Enabled, V-Sync always off
- 'export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none' inside profile
should do the job for slowness while beeing tearless, but why you don't see v-sync? dunno, weird thing

Naaah, don't forget that AMD is doing great job on oss drivers.

Have the OSS drivers improved recently to the point that they would be worth giving another shot in the next kernel version?

2 weeks ago I checked oss on my r290x and opengl performance was poor. ATM im unable to check other gpus, but afaik older cards (especially hd6k series) should work very good.
Maybe today i will retest how does oss work atm.
edit: so after two weeks its better, opengl performance went up (warsow's fps is jumping between 40 and 60frames; heaven and valley looked good, no glitches, but 4-5fps - all @ 2560x1440), kwin works faster. But still there's some lagg on the cursor, less frequent but same in a type. It's harder to notice on kwin - here its happening from time to time (but always during window resize), but it hurts in warsow - here fps drops from 60 to 40 in every second for a half of the second while moving mouse, while using only keyboard to move its fine, no drop - so its gotta be something with the mouse. Normally I would blame xorg and lets say evdev driver, but its working well on catalyst...
It's possible that cursor lagg won't happen on smaller resolution. But here I can feel it, and my brain can't stand it, the cursor has to be in the place where I moved it, always. For now I will get back to catalyst, tell devs about the bug, and retest radeonsi after another 2 weeks.
So radeonsi @ hawaii isn't that good, at least for me. It's much better than 2 weeks ago, though, it's future should be clear.
Is oss worth giving another try? I would say "why not?" It's taking only minutes to switch to it and [mesa-git] repo. Costs almost nothing and could be a nice surprise.

Because it brings latest: drivers, fixes, features. Sometimes you can get only glitches on standard mesa and full, beauty graphics on mesa-git

It shows a file input dialog! I assume you can load your own xorg.conf that way.

Would installing mesa-git help?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok Vi0L0, I tried today with single monitor and again with dual monitor.
This time there were no problems at all... I went through aticonfig --initial=dual-head and amdccle and everything worked fine. (I thought I did that last time too...)

- amdccle -> Tear Free Enabled, V-Sync always off
- 'export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none' inside profile
should do the job for slowness while beeing tearless, but why you don't see v-sync? dunno, weird thing

So it looks like Valve is unhappy with AMD too so maybe we will get some better drivers

Maybe we need Linus to give them the finger as well...

Naaah, don't forget that AMD is doing great job on oss drivers.

That is a bug report from today. How are they supposed to fix it so fast?
