Just selected update tab and it asks to restart and install after I do a refresh. Arch reboots then freezes. Thats it.

There are people reporting that an update to gnome unstable caused their systems to not boot today. Is it possible that this is the issue you are describing? In which case it isn't packagekits fault, but rather the gnome packages
I don't really know what I'm doing.

Most likely the same issue and the gnome packages seem to make sense. The package list seem to be limited. I don't even see a Firefox. Is that being worked on as well or do I have to do something else to get more packages to come up?

What happened is that the system-update target was started, but you had no service that could run in that target.
You have to activate the respective service in order to make updates via GNOME Software work.
# systemctl enable packagekit-offline-update.service
In case someone did an update via GNOME Software and is stuck at boot, just add
break=postmount
to your kernel parameters, boot and do
# rm /system-update

Hi,
is there any way how to install gnome-software package without enabling unstable repository? Because, If I it understand right, if I will enable unstable repository, all packages will upgrade from there.
Thanks

One Question: I don't see any Software in gnome-software. Also, Updates aren't working (greyed out). Do I miss something?

You need to install the appstream metadata manually. The guy who did the work to get it working on Arch pulled the metadata from the Arch repo and put it into an appstream file.
It only worked for me with the appstream-glib-git from AUR, though. Gnome Software and packagekit is buggy anyway and will not be moved from [gnome-unstable].

Thanks for your answer. I've tried that already, without luck. Seems as we have to wait a bit longer. Not that gnome-software is a must have (thanks to yaourt). Another Question I have: how can one use gnome-software to edit the folders in the appview? That is a way more interesting point for me.

For me that was also pretty buggy. First you need to import the metadata otherwise Gnome Software won't recognize most of your applications in your overview. After that you just click the checkbox in the headerbar on the top right and select the apps that you want to move into another folder. I found it to be a bit cumbersome just to move icons around.

Is it just me or is this option misplaced there? It would be (just my personal opinion) a lot better if you could make those settings in an application like alacarte.

The goal with app-folders is to just be able to make them dynamically from the overview, like what is found in android. Dragging an icon onto another creates a brand new app-folder, and dragging icons out of an app-folder back to the main level will automatically remove the app folder once it holds no more icons. That is what has been talked about. It just has not been implemented in Gnome-Shell yet. Patches welcome

Great news,
Software is available in AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gnome-software/) . The alpm backend was fixed and the appstream metadata are now packaged for Arch Linux.
Give it a try !
PS : it's the 3.14.2 version. If it works well, it will be included in official repos with GNOME 3.16. So test it !

After installing, under new all I see is "firefox", though I can see all my installed apps under "installed". Searching for an app that I don't have installed (though I know is in the repos) results in a "no application found" message.
For some reason it is only showing me installed applications, and doesn't appear to know the existence of non installed apps.
**EDIT.
Solved my own problem by installing "archlinux-appstream-data", which also pulls in appstream as a dependency. I have asked fbourigault to add this as a dependency to the aur build of Gnome-Software.

I would also like to report a weird issue with applications showing up under "installed" with regards to app folders. Only one of the three Avahi applications that I have in my overview, and only one of the 4 Qt4 applications show up under the installed section, which means I cannot set all of those apps to be in the sundry folder, only one out of each group. I think this is due to apps having more than one .desktop file bundled per package. I do not know of a solution to this, but I though it worth mentioning.
I don't really know what I'm doing.

Thanks Fabian. Great work BTW! So far so good. My only other issue is the known issue about tracking installed apps when switching between the GUI and pacman cli

Problem installing apps. It just hangs with 'Installing' on app.
Also can't see all of my installed apps.
I did update the system through Gnome Software with success! :-)

This should be fixed since packagekit 1.0.5

As said by Matthias Clasen in the bug report about having more than one .desktop application per package, the best fix is to do on the packaging side. I analyzed appstream xml (from archlinux-appstream-data) package and there is only 31 packages providing more than one application.

I don't know what to do to fix this issue, but I think maintainers of those packages don't want to split just for GNOME Software.
The same happens in muon. Regardless of whether it's a good idea or not to split each application in its own package, this should be somehow fixed upstream, as there are cases where splitting is impossible (for instance in the krusader case, one of the desktop files simply launches the application as root).
Offline
I think the crusader case different from the other because it's the same app. I think the root mode should be discarded while building the XML.

IMO Mathias isn't wrong. It would be easier for the end users to manage packages if there were one per package. A great case in point is the Qt4 package, in which case, since they are bundled together you manditorilly get designer, linguist, assistant, and qdbusviewer, when all I really want is spotify, dropbox, and VLC! And I can't remove those 4 packages because to do so I need to get rid of my entire qt4 stack. This is contrary to the way Qt5 is being packaged, which is great for Qt5, however Qt4 is still a mess.
Do you think it appropriate to try to push for a no more than one application per package policy for arch, or potentially just emailing the packagers and asking them to change. Or should we just give up on the idea?
EDIT** Qt5 does still bundle them together, but does so in a non-manditory package called Qt5-tools. Better, but still not great.
