Modern guide to understanding luksFormat options

Just just saw that ssh 6.7 disables some ciphers and I am learning about making my /home encrypted with dm-crypt. I read the luks FAQ and our wiki guide but I can't find a good guide that discusses the luksFormat options in detail that normal people can understand. Can someone post a url they feel does it? Like, I want to learn more about the ciphers, keysize, hash choices and related items before I got and commit to a formatting my /home.
