Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

Execue me, but anyway why you named gstreamer 0.10 package as gstreamer0.10 instead of simply gstreamer-0.10?
As we all know gstreamer 1.0 will eventually be based on 0.10, and its developers consider to deprecate 0.8, that means we will get no more big update from 0.8 branch unless some security or critical fix. And most of applications that take advantage of gstreamer will certainly update to gstreamer 0.10 API soon.
For Arch's package maintaining, to be -0.10 means user can get it automatically when update system, more importantly we will run less troubles when gstreamer becomes 1.0. As far as 0.8 is concerned, simply follow the case we did with nvidia driver, rename it as gstreamer0.8 and make all applications really need 0.8 to dependent upon it. And a headline news in website will do all necessary explanation.
You  can surely do it later, but I think it's better to do it early than later since now we have a much shorter list which is dependent  with 0.8.
Just my 0.2 cents, ignore it if you don't think so, it's really trival.

Thank all of you for excellent work.

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

eventually 0.10 indeed need and will be replaced by the normal gstreamer name. However, as the time of your writing, neither gnome2.13 nor gstreamer0.10 have hit the testing repo, hence the name change is not possible atm, but I'm sure the devs will choose the correct time for changing names.

@ blaasvis: could you provide dbus-sharp in your repo, makes things easier for upgraders

Do you have the avahi daemon running?

[edit] at least if you need it, others you can ignore that error

[edit2]
there seems to be a bug in avahi too:

[root@pressh_box sbin]# avahi-daemon

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

I was about to try totem again, as I was using mplayer before. No luck sad

[pressh@pressh_box ~]$ totem

** (totem:4816): WARNING **: Trying to connect to an older version of the GNOME screensaver

** (totem:4816): WARNING **: No GConf default video sink key and autovideosink doesn't work

** (totem:4816): WARNING **: No GConf default audio sink key and autoaudiosink doesn't work
[pressh@pressh_box ~]$

Totem starts up and than quits directly with error message 'could not close supporting library'

Is this just me missing something ?

yeah, I actually never used it, but was about to look what it has to offer.
Well, looks like there is no need for it, I can just do a 'pacman -Rcs' as well

That seems too black and white a picture to me. The GUI is IMHO a total nightmare. Why shouldn't a movie player be nicely integrated to the desktop, as any other app? I get feaver fits whenever MPlayer presents it's file chooser to me - really prefer Gnome's file chooser there. DVD Playback never really worked for me either.

There is a need for non-skinned media players. Not everybody want's a media player that looks like a spacecraft cockpit. I don't want 1000 options. I prefer setting ONCE, centrally, that I want my audio output via ALSA, then Ryhthmbox, Totem, the entire Gnome desktop just follow that behaviour.

The absence of options is probably what you call dumbified. That's an old discussion. Personally, I prefer apps with a lightweight GUI and reasonable presettings. Other prefer to have it the otherway round.

I do of course admit that MPlayer had a decent playback engine at times where Totem couldn't even play a simple *.mpg without failing. Those are bygone times however. GStreamer is really taking up shape. It just makes so much sense to have ONE multimedia framework that is used by several apps. It obviously took a while, but I think it's worth it. I recently played a h.264 HD clip in MPlayer and Totem using GStreamer 0.10. Totem actually had less CPU consumption.

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

I second alexthelion, I feel totem too simple, too well integrated in Gnome, it feels like Home when it works, now since totem/totem-xine won't work I'm forced to use mplayer, sorry but it sucks.. here's why hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong
1- Not integrated in Gnome, already said but worth it
2- If i double click 5 files, 5 instances will open, adding to the playlist is a pain, while in totem, if i want to play the 100 clips i have i just type Ctrl+A+Enter, totem will open and all files are enqueued in totem, mplayer would have open 100 window plus 100 error (killall -9 gmplayer lol )
3- all the fancy look of mplayer and skins and i donno wat, are really useless, i used to have ontop for totem on startup, and when totem is open i directly type H (hide controls) i only leave the video window open and i play clips i want while working (thk god the size does not change on each video unlike mplayer). In mplayer i have to put the video window big enough to hide the controls behind it because it wont minimize and when a clip is finished since i cannot even drag & drop in mplayer, I have to close it, double click on the second clips, drag/resize the video, hide the controls etc.... I'm having a nightmare with it

P.S: oops i think we just hijacked the topic, can a mod split the last 3 posts so we can discuss mplayer?
thx smile

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

So reading those replies, I will hack on totem to get it working, I know it can work, so I'll make it work smile
Also my rhythmbox broke, so I'll need to hack on that one too (doesn't play any audio files)

As a totally totem noob, can I get subtitles in totem?
(sorry for further hijacking the topic wink)

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

Yes totem load subtitle, subtitle must be same directory and same name (without extension of course tongue) as the video file

I miss totem sad

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

Same error with totem

libvisual WARNING: no progname: visual_plugin_get_list(): Failed to add the /usr/lib/libvisual/actor directory to the plugin registry
libvisual WARNING: no progname: visual_plugin_get_list(): Failed to add the /usr/lib/libvisual/input directory to the plugin registry
libvisual WARNING: no progname: visual_plugin_get_list(): Failed to add the /usr/lib/libvisual/morph directory to the plugin registry
libvisual WARNING: no progname: visual_plugin_get_list(): Failed to add the /usr/lib/libvisual/transform directory to the plugin registry

Pressh you may want to look into libvisual (since totem and rhythmbox expect /usr/lib/libvisual to exist, and are not finding it).

EDIT:
Do have libvisual installed if you are wondering
[03/06/06 23:09] installed libvisual (0.2.0-3)
[03/06/06 23:09] installed gstreamer0.10-libvisual (0.10.3-2)

EDIT2:

EDIT3:
Do have ffmpeg installed (lots of edits today smile)
[03/06/06 23:09] installed gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (0.10.0-1)

I need to take a deeper look at it, but thats not before tomorrow.

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

I have been using the beta version og gnome for a while and its great. There are some packages however that i can't find (or use ) on my system. They are:

Pesulus
Sabayon

and also someone said Metacity has its own composition manager, that can do all the fancy stuff. Is it part of theis beta yet, and if so how do i enable it.

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

Okay, totem worked, here's what to do

pacman -S totem `pacman -Ss gstreamer0.10 | grep /gstreamer0.10 | awk '{print $1}'`

P.S: the error about libvisual that i saw above, you can fix them by simply

pacman -S libvisual-plugins

But it is not needed for totem to work, i tried it, it works without it

Totem and gstreamer0.10 rocks hello2.gif

When is gnome 2.14 getting released?

I read it was supposed to be released 15 march in some bloggers site, is it true? does anyone have any info about this?

here is the site:

It will really rule when it comes out! atleast thats the expression I get when I read about its features and improvements.

yes it should be released any moment now. Most parts are ready for release on their ftp site, they only have to put things together for the release.

Re: Gnome 2.14 Release

I read somewhere that Metaciy now have it own composite manager, but it is not enabled by default. Is this metacity compiled with the composite manager, and if so, how can I use it? If not where can I find  the pkgbuid. The svn from the first post did not work for me.
