[ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

I had a working system that used the radeon driver, and then the drivers and x server updated. When I first booted my old xorg.conf sort of worked, but the keyboard and mouse were not detected properly and did not work at all, so I removed my xorg.conf because it was "no longer necessary with the open source drivers". Now I get the error "no screens found" whenever I try to start the x server with startx, Same result with an autogened xorg, conf

The computer has two Radeon HD 7770s
Normally it is booted up with an arch install running the fglrx driver, and the system running the open source radeon driver is a fallback system used for maintenance purposes and test the radeon driver.

here is my xorg.log

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

[ 75.855] (EE) RADEON(G0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.

Searching for that error suggests it could be caused by the radeon module not having finished loading/initialising  when X starts.

Could you try booting with the radeon module added to the initramFS , as described in the wiki : Ati Early_start  ?

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

I saw a few threads for nvidia/virtualbox, maybe it's the case here too? I didn't update my system yet, so can't say if radeon is affected too.

I don't want to get in trouble for an empty post again, but I think this is on topic, I just updated xorg-server and I use the Radeon driver with an HD6770 card. Everything seems to be working fine.

It's always been in my initramfs, and it always worked before now.

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

l0vot,

I just had the same problem on my laptop (boots systemd, my main system boots openrc).

It turned out the problem was caused by how i started X.

On TTY1 i had it setup so upon logging in as user, 'startx -- vt7' was executed.
on other TTYs plain startx was used.
logging in tty1 failed with the same messages, logging in and running startx on other ttys worked fine.

I removed the -- vt7 part, and X was started normally when logging in on tty1.

How do you start X ?

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

@Lone_Wolf: I tried a number of different methods, startx -- vt11 is mu default, however I tried startx, xinit, and X, the last one just to see if the server would start without any of my config files getting in the way.

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

Seems i need to clarify what i found a bit :

arch news item wrote:

X is now rootless with the help of systemd-logind, this also means that it must be launched from the same virtual terminal as was used to log in, redirecting stderr also breaks rootless login

Read the bold part thoroughly, it describes the reason why i got the failed to set drm interface error.

Try running 'startx -- vt2' from commandline WHILE LOGGED IN ON TTY2 .
If that works, something in your config makes X try to start on another terminal then the 1 startx is run from.

I have nothing in my config files that would cause that, X starts in the vt it is started in if i do not specify, and why is X rootless now, why would someone break the only way to monitor X errors while X is currently in operation (and the only way to do xorg multiseat i have found)?

Wait, you mean to say that X has disabled running as root?

Tried updating an experimental machine with the same result, How do I force xorg to do what I want regardless of the totally screwed new update.

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

Xorg-server 1.16 now allows to start X rootless when some conditions are met.

https://www.archlinux.org/news/xorg-ser … available/ gives more details.

Look at /usr/bin/Xorg , it's now  a shell script that checks if Xorg.wrap exists, and starts it if it does.

Xorg.wrap then tries to determine whether rootless X is possible (using startx & KMS-capable videodriver satisfy that requirement) , if so it uses logind to start X rootless.
(starting this way can break error redirection and adding options to startx).

There are 2 ways to change the behaviour i know off :

1.
Create /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config file and use that to configure Xorg.wrap .
Details about that file are on the Xorg.wrap manpage .
For some users that's enough to get X working again, for others it's not .

2.

Modify /usr/bin/Xorg so it always starts Xorg.bin .
Any update to xorg-server will offcourse undo this change.

I suggest you start with 1.

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

I tried modding  /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config with no results, same with the second fix. no dice.

Re: [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

I reverted to closed source drivers, and then switched back again a couple months later, I had a different issue involving the auto-detect feature getting tunnel vision when it saw that I had 20-nouveau.conf. it was resolved. Now I need to figure out how to get startx -- vtx working again, but that's for a different thread.
