Today I was only able to perform some quick tests and update catalyst-total @ AUR
quick tests showed that this driver is pretty good.
2d rendering was never that fast on 290X @ catalyst [its almost (edit: well, almost almost ) as fluid as on oss radeon]
IMPORTANT
thing is that from now on theres this new symlink:
ln -snf /usr/lib/libXvBAW.so.1.0 ${pkgdir}/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_drv_video.so
which will conflict with xvba-video packages. Thats amd's will, maybe they will do something with it. Feel free to remove this file(symlink) from your system before updating (if you will be touched by a conflict).
I already have updated xvba-video and opencl-headers (2.0) packages on my disk, as well as catalyst packages, but I need to test it. Before I will do this I have to go asleep. I already feel dizzy, sorry mates. I will perform repo (as well as other AUR packages) update tomorrow.
BTW vaapi seems to not work: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthre … post458342
Does anyone have instructions on how to install AMD ADL SDK, everything I try get's shot down because the file I DLed doesn't pass the integrity check, even after I fixed the md5sum.
Did you follow the note?:
NOTE: Download ADL_SDK_6.0.zip manually from
http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks … y-adl-sdk/
and paste it next to this PKGBUILD
Edit: repos are updated, archive repos are named as: [catalyst-stable-14.9] and [catalyst-14.9-ubuntu]
actually vaapi does work well here without additional xvba-video packages

just add

export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME
LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/dri/
export LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH
Edit2: ohh wait, I was too fast because somethings wrong is going on with osd (including subtitles) when using this new vaapi driver, guess it needs some fixes ;P, so it's still beter to use xvba here

Everyone who's affected by GDM segfaults bug should report it (at amd.com/report ?). AMD claim team for this purpose and for Linux too. So if there will be anought reports, maybe they will fix it.
One example for all. Despite to large amout topics over HW forums, AMD didnt know about HDMI scaling bug. Until some journalist ask them at press conference about Omegas. Next day? Driver version: 14.501.1003.1001 (AMD Catalyst™ HDMI Scaling Hotfix Software Suite). I know it for MS W, but still where is some will,....
so pls report

Out of curiosity tried this shiny new "omega" release after several years on the open source driver. Well, first it didn't work with GDM, then it didn't start neither Gnome 3 (some RandR error apparently) nor Cinnamon (monitor goes right into sleep mode and "XIO: fatal IO error 11" in the log) with SDDM. Also same old (reported on their unofficial bug tracker) trouble with laptop screen going blank on HD5xxx after stopping X, restoring only on reboot. So no, not good enough yet

I've been using the catalyst-stable repository and updated to 14.12 yesterday. Unfortunately it has a major bug: it causes X to leak memory at nearly 1 MB per second. Needless to say this would render my system unusable within a few hours. Downgrading back to 14.9 solved the problem. All other packages are up-to-date. Anyone else experiencing this? I have dual Radeon HD 7870s if that makes any difference.
Offline
Updated today, haven't seen any problems. Using Gnome with xinitrc. No memory leaks. XBMC is up all the time, playing videos without problems.

Am officially furious. Had high hopes that this new Omega crap will fix things, but no, it still crashes or completely locks up the laptop.
So, I install Kubuntu, just for the fun of it, and IT WORKS THERE. Why? Beats me. Same driver, over there just works(TM).
UGH.
I removed everything related to AMD to get a clean environment, reinstalled catalyst-total-pxp, and here's what I get:

I wonder, just wonder, what's there left to do. I've been googling, reading, whatnot, and nothing, no matter what I do, same error.
Any hint, even a crazy one, is most welcome and appreciated.

@Xabre: There's a lot more to it than just the drivers, and it could damn well be anything. From the sounds of it, you loaded up Kubuntu 14.04 which is packages with X.org 1.15, where Arch uses X.org 1.16. Also, who knows what patches the Ubuntu developers put into their software to make it do their magic stuff. If we could work that out, then maybe it'd be possible to work out why there are performance issues on Arch.
Claire is fine.
Problems? I have dysgraphia, so clear and concise please.

Kubuntu 14.10 uses Xorg 1.16 as well, that's why I used it as a refference. Their whole graphic stack there is currently pretty similar to what Arch offers, so it must be something they add, some patch or whatever voodoo magic.
What bugs me the most is that the damn thing works with Xorg 1.15, but it's getting almost impossible to use it due to rolling nature of Arch. Pretty soon it will be unusable that way( it already complains about vaapi support after new mesa and stuff).
Line that keeps repeating itself, however,
[ 62.931] (EE) fglrx(0): failed to map MMIO register space!(EE) fglrx(0): MapMMIO failed
is something related to kernel, or at least that's what Google's been suggesting, and suggestions are mostly for older kernels.
Kubuntu 14.10 uses Linux 3.16.0, we're on 3.17.* for a while now, that's about the only hint that's left. Will try with LTS kernel and see how it goes there, though my hopes are very low at the moment.

Last time i checked ubuntus fglrx i saw many many patches out there, maybe heres the solution. It could be also a good idea to ask ubuntus maintainer, maybe he knows about some workaround. Also remember that ubuntu is officially supported by fglrx - things should to work there, where if not there? .
I won't be able to help you much here because I don't have pxp hardware. Maybe I could help in other way, just don't know how. There's also one important thing - intel driver, i believe that fglrx must to know how to talk to intel driver, and some changes on intel side could brake their conversation. I guess I would start from here.
Meanwhile I'm continuing testing, I noted no memleaks for now (maybe it's related to crossfire, could some crossfire owner confirm the problem?). metro ll is fluid on maxed settings.

I'm still getting sections of my screen flashing / artifacting I was hoping this would be fixed by now, but it seems like something that I'm just going to have to put up with unless anyone has figured out some kind of solution...

Hmm, was wrong (or better: don't know how to read), ubuntu uses 2.9.914 intel driver, we use 2.9.916.
Interesting note in their changelog:
* Fix a crash when fglrx steals the screen in DGPU or IGPU mode.

I don't know if it was this update or something else but Metro: LL now gets past the "press any key page" for me without crashing.

I found a very interesting bug. If I connect my Radeon 280X with Display-Port and HDMI my screens are always black. If I use HDMI and DVI the screens works great.

Got a chance to test again today and my memory leak issue happens with both Xorg 1.15 and 1.16. Unfortunately I can't remove one card or disable Crossfire because my system is a Mac Pro (judge all you want...this machine is sexy ) and trying to set it up without Crossfire gives me no video output at all. So my guess would be it's either caused by Crossfire or by one of the workstation graphics features, although the latter are all turned off as far as I can tell.

for now I can tell that GNOME is working good.
@Vi0L0 Can you help me then?
My Gnome is broken since the 3.14 release, I don’t want to use another DE and I can’t use the open source drivers because they fail the display port link training with my internal display.
I too have this problem:
then it didn't start neither Gnome 3 (some RandR error apparently)
Which was reported here.
Out of curiosity I installed a second arch from scratch and it’s experiencing the same problem.
There may be some settings which circumvent the problematic code.
Any idea how I could get it to work?

Not sure, I was able to fix my problems with gnome, but it could be irrevlant (and turned out not related to catalyst), more here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1471978
Today I'm gonna update amdapp-sdk on [catalyst] repo with 3.0 beta, 2.9.1 stable version will be available on [catalyst-stable] repo. 3.0 beta brings opencl 2.0 support, theres lot of examples for it and there are some nice docs from amd (available in amdapp-sdk-docs).
I'm sad because CodeXL still got this "OpenCL-OpenGL sharing is inactive" bug and don't render the smoke on teapot example ... It's working fine on windows 8.1, which makes me sad even more heh... (on Ubuntu some devices are rendering smoke, some are not, but "OpenCL-OpenGL sharing is inactive" bug is always there, on Windows 8.1 there's no error)
Hmm, was wrong (or better: don't know how to read), ubuntu uses 2.9.914 intel driver, we use 2.9.916.
Interesting note in their changelog:* Fix a crash when fglrx steals the screen in DGPU or IGPU mode. - fix-uxa-fglrx-stealing.diff
Could you check this patch (on our 2.9.916)? It looks promising. If not - let me know, I will prepare pkg in free time.

Interesting, what GPU do you have? Maybe it's related to the model?
I'm also using the MATE desktop environment with LightDM, but I'd be surprised if that makes a difference...

What version of X are you using? I was having a horrible memory leak using 1.15, but I've been testing out 1.16 the past few days and X has been behaving properly. I am also using OpenGL2.0 rather than the default of 3.0 for kwin compositing.
I am however experiencing some issues with libvaapi and VLC. dmesg is giving me this error occasionally.

Tried again with 14.12 drivers and xorg 1.16, kdm login manager and startx both. Tried to open a gnome session (3.14). Gives "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." right after the start of the session or right after executing gnome-session in startx's xterm. Also the case for a newly created user. Journalctl says (relevant section I guess)

Any ideas?
What is atieventsd for, btw? Can't start it, it misses acpid.socket - even after I installed acpid. Do I need it?

I reported the bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741581
I patched mutter for me using the trap calls mentioned in the bug report, which surprisingly didn’t work the next day, so currently the offending method is just completely commented out in my build and everything is working fine again.

Gosh, thank you so much for that.
I'd really like to use my laptop again some time
Can you provide a patch for mutter?
