Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I'm having the same issue with a HP Compaq 8510w. Upgraded from linux-3.17.6-1-i686 to linux-3.18.2-2-i686 and the fan was on what seems to be full speed. Downgraded back to linux-3.17.6-1-i686 and it's normal again.

Has anyone found/filed a kernel bug report?

Hi, as I suggested to @amish earlier in this thread, have you tried installing 3.18.1-1 from the Arch Rollback Machine? I ask because the fan issue was not present for them in 3.18.1 but was present in 3.18.2.

If you're another person affected from 3.18.1 to 3.18.2, then I think we might have a case to put to the guys at the kernel bugzilla (not the Arch Bug tracker).

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I can test only 3.18.2-2 as this was a new install and I do not have anything else stored in the cache.

Update: Tried LTS kernel and fans are silent again.

The only difference in the output of all mentioned commands .. thermal numbers:

$ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
60000
61000
52000
28700
20000

IDK what that last number means, but on the latest kernel it is 5 times bigger than before (and now on LTS).

Use the cached version from the Arch Rollback Machine:

What is strange is that on some boots the fan will go to full speed and I will get this:

[root@ristic ~]# cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
48000
70000
51000
48000
20000
100000

Other times the fan will remain on and constant but not at full speed and I'll get something like what is shown in my first paste.

What I have noticed is that the fan does not go to full speed and remain constant on the 3.17.6 kernel but will on either the 3.18.1 or 3.18.2 kernels. Maybe something to do with the

kernel: ACPI: Fan [C367] (off)

lines only being present in the 3.17.6 kernel?

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Ok I suppose we can wait for 3.18.3 (which has some ACPI related fixes - though I dont know if related to this bug)

If still not solved we can file on bugzilla at kernel.org

The only difference in the output of all mentioned commands .. thermal numbers:

$ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp

20000

IDK what that last number means, but on the latest kernel it is 5 times bigger than before (and now on LTS).

Just for information's sake, the numbers (I believe) are ohm readings. The higher the number, the lower the temp. Thermistors work differently from thermostats by reading the return signal (voltage) from the thermistor to the monitoring IC. Without a chart, it's almost impossible to know what the readings mean or if they're being read correctly. Case in point, 6300 ohms may be 10deg in a Samsung refrigerator, but in an LG, it would mean 40deg. -5deg in a GE (examples, I don't have a chart for any of those handy).

lts (and previous stable)

$ sensors
radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +13.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +42.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +42.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
$ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
38000
38000
28900
30000
45000
40000

no journalctl -n 3000 |grep -i LNXTHERM -A 30

3.18.2-2

$ sensors
radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +13.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
$ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
34000
34000
28700
100000
35000
35000

no journalctl -n 3000 |grep -i LNXTHERM -A 30

According to GKrellm the temp was 100*C with normal being 30-50-55-60*C (and rarelly/extreme 75*C).
This temp  is connected to the GPU but its not a normal temp because it throttles between and only those temperature values and the fan rpm follows accordingly.
For example during no video load (HD or html5) it rests at 30*C and fan is quiet.

Looks like this new issue affects compaq laptops and was not present in the latest stable kernel prior to 3.18.2-2

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Same problem with my HP Compaq 8510w!

edit:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78201#c106

try this as root:

cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state
echo 1 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state
echo 0 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state

...works for me.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@everytrash, thanks for that. The fan would return to normal for me anytime from about ten minutes to one hour, with it being more often a shorter time period. However, it's nice to be able to slow it down straight away.

I did this:

# cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state
0
0
0
1
1
1
1
# echo 0 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device3/cur_state
# echo 0 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device4/cur_state
# echo 0 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5/cur_state
# echo 0 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device6/cur_state
#

The main fan noise died down after 3 and 4, and a quieter noise died down after 5 and 6.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Is forcing state to off a right solution?!

If afterwards some CPU intensive task is run, does it again speed up automatically?

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Update: Arch Linux with Kernel "3.18.2-2-ARCH" and "xf86-video-nouveau" is working for me too. I have this problem only with the original "nvidia" driver.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Hey, whilst I was staring at the thread again, compiling all the information for a bug report, two (more things) came to mind:

1) Are people happy waiting for 3.18.3 to hit [core] and trying that? If that fixes it, then we can write 3.18.2 off as one of those buggy as hell releases.
2) Does it happen with the mainline kernel, currently at 3.19-rc5 and a repository as well? If that fixes it, then we can write 3.18.2 off as one of those buggy as hell releases.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

1) Yes. I am waiting for 3.18.3 because it should be around the corner
2) Not tried  / Can not try either

Given that 3.18.2 misbehaves on my HP ProBook 4410s as well. I will be using LTS until 3.18.3 comes out.

Edit: I tried 3.18.3 from [testing], and the fan blasts at full speed.

% cat /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
16000
35000
29000
33000
21600
90000

I'll have to either wait for an as yet unreleased kernel, or stay with LTS.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Hasn't happened to me now, on the last two boots. Which is odd. Fan still kicks in on cpu intensive tasks (gimp, etc.).

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Reading this thread I'm getting two topics, one is just the fan speed and the other is the question if the fan speed is related to higher system temperatures. I'm unclear if there is consensus whether systems are running hotter and triggering higher fan speeds.

I run dual boot Win/Arch and I noticed Arch is running hotter than I'm used to.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@xtian, I don't see any evidence in the comments above, and through trials on my own system, that the system runs up a higher temperature going from 3.17.x to 3.18.2. One of the channels reported under /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp refers to the fan speed. On my own system, it is the last one, thermal_zone5, also identified as FDTZ in journalctl.

If Arch is running hotter than before for you, I suspect it's a different issue.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Its either:
1) a bug which causes temperature to go high and hence fan speed is increases
2) a bug which wrongly detects temperateure as high and hence fan speed is increased

Can not think of any other reason

I agree with this. I've seen one post saying 3.18.3 still affects them, so it looks like I will probably have a good reason to take it to the kernel bugzilla when 3.18.3 hits [core] (which is what I'm waiting for).

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I have the same issue with 3.18.2 kernel on my HP 6730s (model FU487ES).
I think I'll just downgade the kernel to 3.17.something. smile

Here 6820s Kernel 3.18.3 Fan at full speed.
Switching to 3.17 no problems at all.
