Need help with SOCKS5 proxy and authentication

I would like to run a password protected proxy on my VPS and do some internet browsing through it. I chose the SS5 package. Reading the manual I uncommented this line in /etc/ss5/ss5.conf

auth - - u

I set up the password in /etc/opt/ss5/ss5.passwd

myname mypass

Then I run SS5:

sudo ss5 -u root -b 0.0.0.0:1080

I made the following changes in my Opera browser config (opera:config)

SOCKS password: mypass
SOCKS server: XX.XXX.XX.XXX:1080
SOCKS username: myname

I restarted Opera, but still doesn't work. What can I do to make it work, or what other SOCKS software package can I use?
