openssl issues

I have been having trouble with openssl since openssl-1.0.1.l-1. When running "pacman -Syu", openssl complained a lib file doesn't exist (not sure, but probably libssl.so.9). I solved this problem by renaming the locally installed version to the required name (e.g. renamed  libssl.so.8 to  libssl.so.9).

Today when doing another update "pacman -Syu", it tried to update to openssl-1.0.2-1. But there were a string of  error messages of type: "openssl: /usr/share/man/man3/DES_ofb64_encrypt.3ssl.gz exists in filesystem"

I had to update the openssl using the --force option. Has anyone else encountered these problems? Or any guesses what has been going on with openssl?

Thanks,

Re: openssl issues

You didn't know which file it was so you renamed one anyway and then used "--force".  It's unlikely anyone else is having this problem.

--force
Bypass file conflict checks and overwrite conflicting files. If the package
that is about to be installed contains files that are already installed,
this option will cause all those files to be overwritten. Using --force will
not allow overwriting a directory with a file or installing packages with
conflicting files and directories. This option should be used with care,
           ideally not at all.

Don't do this.

1. Tell us you got an error without actually telling us what the error is.
2. Manually rename files managed by the package manager.
3. Use --force

You had a small hole (which was probably fairly simple to fix), and you've dug it deeper and deeper before asking for help. Now no-one is really sure what happened, or how to resolve it.

Re: openssl issues

Thanks Karol, for the link.

loafer, my error information is not very descriptive, but you are way off the mark.

fukawi2, my system is working fine. But the 2 pacman problems in last 8 months have both been with openssl.

Re: openssl issues

What I said was simply based on what you said you did:

Nothing to do with openssl/pacman: you adopted a "non-canonical" approach by renaming the .so - of course you can expect breakage doing this...

Without canonical information about the errors you had, and without a broken system to debug? This is going no where. The members of this community are not psychics, mind-readers or in possession of crystal balls. We can't go back in time to investigate your broken computer, and it appears no-one else has experienced these issues, so it certainly appears something specific to your installation.

Closing.
