So, this has been broken for me for about a year now. Today there was an update and a change of name (from gst-vaapi to gstreamer-vaapi), but the result is always the same: green screen when playing html5 videos in Firefox, or any video in Totem (and other gstreamer based players). VAAPI itself works just fine when not going through gstreamer.
There are several threads in the forum about this issue and nobody seems to have an answer. I am on a first gen Core i7 + Intel HD video.
What are other people's experiences?

I have full-HD playback in YouTube (with options for quad-HD) on a Haswell i5 + HD4600 so it seems to work for me.
I think you need the other gst/gstreamer packages as well but I can't be sure -- I've just installed everything gstreamer-related...

Basically, don't bother with hardware decoding in Firefox. You're not gaining anything until Firefox, except possibly issues.

Do you have to optional deps installed?
Disable all add-ons, try with a new firefox profile.
totem has been marked out of date, so maybe there's an update pending.

I have the same problem -green screen- on radeon. At least VAAPI works with the vdpau backend.
