Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Yes same as mine. I did not try with live cd.

Did you try rebooting once or twice using live cd?

Try this:
Boot using live cd. Let it run for 5-10minutes.
Reboot and check fan status.

Someone in other bug report mentioned that if CPU is cold and booted then fan remains at low speed. And if CPU is already in use (hot) and rebooted then FAN goes to full spped.

PS: I did not test that scenario.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I installed my system from live cd today, and the fan hasn't been running high even once. Only during boot which is logical.
And yes i did try this multiple times. booting live cd, then rebooting to normal system and back again.

In normal system the fan is running fast all the time, in the live cd it is just running slowly all the time (which is the prefered situation).

please try to boot the live cd and check if it indeed works.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Well booting through live CD and testing is not going to help because issue exists in normal HD based boot and we need solution for that kernel.

May be live CD kernel has limited features / modules which does not trigger this issue.

Hopefully one kernel developer is looking in to it.

Lets see.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Well something must be different otherwise issue should occur in live CD too!

can you check what is the output of "acpi -tc"?

Is there a difference between normal HDD boot and live CD boot?

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Only 1 FAN is ON (cooling 0) - strange

And Thermal 0 is 0 degree!! That is also strange!

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I think this laptop only has one fan?

In the changelog of 3.18-rc2 I found that there have been some changes concerning acpi/ fan:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/10/26/137

I hope someone will fix this soon too, I always like to keep my system up to date.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

No what I mean is faster the fan - more cooling devices become 1 from 0.

So when I said only Cooling 0 is ON is strange, I meant that its running very slow.

Mostly because it thinks temperature is supercool (0 degree C) and hence it thinks that there is almost no need to run the fan!

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

The fan is indeed running slow in the live cd. Mybe this has something to do with the overheating problems I had a couple of months back.

have you seen this bug yet?
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93301

maybe our fan is running high all the time cause it measures the temperature during boot and sets the fan speed accordingly and then never changes it again. This would also explain why the live cd doesnt show this problem, as the live cd has less work to do while booting.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

ok, so now the issue is occurring in the live environment too. And this occurs with a fully cold cpu (I just booted up after it has been off the whole night).

ps. Athough I probably won't be much use for fixing this bug, I'd be happy to provide info or do some testing.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I just tried freshly installed Arch on external disk, and my HP laptop still doesn't like 3.18.* serie. I'm downloading latest iso, so I'll report back as soon as I get it workin' (live, ofc).

EDIT:

As I suspected, same crap with live CD. It starts quietly and when 'Booting the kernel' appears it almost stops spining until 'Login Service' starts. After that, fan is @ full speed. To me it makes no difference live CD or installed OS. hmm

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Hi, all,

sorry for the late response.
As we have many reporters, based on different platforms, for the same problem.
I'd like to stick to one platform to debug.
So, for anyone of you that have this issue and would like to help debug the issue, please attach the following information altogether.
1. your platform model name
2. acpidump output
3. output of "grep . /sys/class/thermal/*/*" in both 3.17 and 3.18 kernel
4. output of "grep . /sys/class/thermal/*/device/path" in both 3.17 and 3.18 kernel
5. in 3.18 kernel, when the problem is reproduced, please confirm whether the temperature changes or not if you change the workload manually.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Hello

Thank you for looking in to issue.

What is "change workload manually"? Are we supposed to run some command?

And where do we post output? Here in this thread or kernel bug thread?

yes, e.g. you can run "cat /dev/zero > /dev/null" to keep the processor busy

And where do we post output? Here in this thread or kernel bug thread?

Better in kernel bugzilla, but we need to stick to one platform so that we won't get confused.

I don't think this is an actual over heating issue, the air coming out from the fan does not seem to be hot and the temp causing the mad max fan speed does/is not a real temp (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1494413) but a controller of some sort.

Also on this machine the fan speed starts to go up just after D-bus starts on boot.

(I know you asked to post in bugzilla but I don't know how to make attachments there and I did not want to spam it)
2. how to make acpidump output?

Same problem here with HP 6730b, however it occurs randomly.

You may want to submit the attachments / output requested by Zheng Rui in his post.

If you do, then please post to bugzilla thread - link in my post above.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

HP ProBook 5310m.

I installed the kernel from repo-ck 3.19.1-1-ck[core2], and I discovered if I manually turn off the fans using this script:

for i in /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device* ; do
	type=$( cat "$i"/type )
	if [ "$type" = "Fan" ] ; then
		echo 0 > "$i"/cur_state
	fi
done

then the fans actually come back on normally in a few minutes. With previous problematic kernel versions the fans would remain off, even when reaching high temperatures.

So, I wrote a systemd service which runs this script upon startup:

[Unit]
Description=Slow system fans

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/zsh /path/to/fans/script

[Install]
WantedBy=default.target

It works realiably as a workaround, it slows the fans about 3 seconds after they start spinning.

In my BIOS I have the option "Fan Always On While On AC", but the "fan-bug" (codename speedyfan?) occurs regardless of that option being On or Off.
Actually, I noticed the option used to be On the first time the bug occurred. So that means that up until the fault being introduced to the kernel, this option was always
somehow ignored.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Seems like good work around. (I have not tried)

"Fan always on while on AC" is BIOS related setting. Not OS related. OS does not know about it. Once OS boots it takes over the fan control.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I had the same problem, after I upgraded from kernel 3.17.x to 3.18.6 my laptop fan kept on going full speed. I went to the BIOS and disabled the option : "Always turn on fan on AC" and then my fan would turn for about a minute after I boot the PC than it would stop or slow down (my CPU temperature is never above 38°C ). I am not sure, but I think that kernel 3.18 takes this option into consideration. However, while on battery the fan exhibits the same behavior.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Test fix for the bug is provided by Rui in bugzilla thread.

Can someone please compile and upload the kernel with those patches?

I can test it.

Man thank you for the tip. I had forgotten about this option as I never thought it worked in the first place. But now its disabled again and fan behaiviour is like you're saying, a few minutes of the extreme spinning and then its normal. (18.6.x). For kernel 19..2 it takes about 10s for fan to become normal.

One thing I noticed about the temp causing the extreme fan spinning now is that it can go to 0*C and then the fan stops spinning at all. If a load becomes present it woulf jump instrantly to 30*C. Its not a real temp like a gpu/cpu one.

ps: this works well only from cold boot (poweroff) if laptop is already on (3.18) and reboot fan spinning does not go down. Rebooting into 3.18 from 3.14 is also normal.
