In the meantime, it is KDE's plan that you will continue to use the KDE SC 4-based apps until they're ported. They are perfectly compatible with the Plasma 5 desktop.

From the functional part they are working, but what about the appearances? In case of Krusader, its tabs doesn't look like qt5 tabs at all, see:

kf5_tabs_issue.jpg

Is that because of porting issues or some issues in my particular case (some settings are wrong)?

You are not using the KDE4 breeze theme

Oh, thanks a lot! For anyone who encounters the same issue: the solution is to install extra/breeze-kde4 and set is via /usr/bin/qtconfig-qt4

Yes: System Settings -> Application Style -> GNOME Application Style (GTK)

I use oxygen-gtk, as there's no breeze port to GTK as far as I know. They still look a little out of place, but not ugly at least.

You can even find GTK+ themes through that interface the same way you find KDE themes.

That in mind, anybody found a good theme to pair with Breeze Dark yet? So far I've settled for Vertex-Dark, which is passable, but far from ideal.

In the Breeze source code Orion theme is recommended: https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/w … in.cpp#L77

The theme is in the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gtk-theme-orion/

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I've noticed annoying things. I want to ask if that are well known bugs,

a) Plasma crash at startup

Application: plasmashell (plasmashell), signal: Segmentation fault
Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".

full log here http://pastebin.com/8kP7A2yZ

b) I can't add programs to favorites in app launchers it freezes
c) I can't open links from apps to images or less popular formats

Could not write to /home/alain/.r00t/kioexec/krun/*
#and then
kde init cannot exec kioexec

I tried to change permissions, create fresh folders, it didint help

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

My segfaults are actually a qt5 bug:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341497#c1
https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-38326
https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-44158

It has been open for a year and will apparently be fixed in qt5.5.

I had the same issue some time ago. Deleting a lock file in $HOME/.config has fixed the problem for me. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact file name.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I have a bit of a problem with Dolphin now where it won't remember any folders added to (or removed from) the places sidebar, editing /home/user/.local/share/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml seems to work, but that is less than ideal. I can't really tell when this stopped working since I already had some of my most visited folders bookmarked, I kind of just noticed it by accident.

That's the kbookmarks bug, I guess the fix (if any) has still not made it to the stable repos.

I suppose this is the bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=342685 it has already been fixed, but it hasn't made it yet into the testing repo either, I guess I just have to deal with it for a while.
Thanks for your help.

Oh god, took me hours to figure what the problem was. I added it to the wiki.

Plasma 5 is working fairly well, but currently I cannot logout nor shutdown from the menu. If I do that, only plasma closes but all other apps keep running. However, if I run

qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0

or

qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 2 2

from a console, kde does what is expected. Am I missing something? I don't really know where to search for error logs.....

Thanks in advance.

If that's the case then it's not the right bug since that's the one I have installed.

I've had the same problem, in the end I used konqueror to edit the places menu and the changed showed up in dolphin too. It's really strange since dolphin was able to hide "Trash" for example but not add any new entries.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I like to use the Application Launcher with a left-click on any blank area on the plasma desktop. However since switching to KF5 the application names don't appear correctly.

Here's the Menu Editor showing Firefox as an example:
1uxCO6flwerL

And here's the Application Launcher showing how the "Description" field is used instead of the "Name" field:
1uxCx4iNnY6c

Is there some way to get it to read the right field?

Dolphin is also unable to re-arrange the device entries, while Konqueror can. I have also run into the places entries going completely and utterly bonkers on an older version of kbookmarks that was supposed to be not affected. The only fix was to edit stuff with konqueror, so thanks for the tip.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I also can't recommend the upgrade. Sure it can be ugly, but that's almost unavoidable until the next release with oxygen — whether you stay on kde4 or not.

My main gripe is that there isn't any migration path. You install the new frameworks and bam, here you go, configure everything again and ups, we forgot all your sessions (desktop, konsole). Some little bits can be copied over from .kde4, but that's it. And if you just upgrade some of the apps that somehow came into stable, ups, the desktop session won't remember them (konsole, kate&kwrite), so you have to reopen everything manually each time. Plus that silly KIO bug ...

Looks like Arch got fooled by kde communication too — we were promised a smooth transition. For many, it's more similar to the kde4 early releases' experience.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

It's a shame that the transition is causing big issues for some people. Not at all wanting to rub it in, but more to offer a positive voice for counter-balance: for me, the transition was relatively painless and easy. I was quite apprehensive before the switch, but it was actually less broken than I thought it was going to be. There are still a few (relatively minor) features that I'm missing, and a couple of small issues that took some time to figure out. All in all, though, I was quite pleasantly surprised. It's definitely *way* more usable that early KDE 4.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Bit the bullet and installed Plasma 5
Here's my experience after working with it for a few hours

Would appreciate any information how to work around these:
-Some (most) icons on start menu are displayed black. (Icons works in menu editor. Does not work when right clicking and selecting "Edit Application" on the start menu.)
-Applications started by global shortcuts does not get focus.
-Actions on title-bars (Double-clicking/scrolling) does not work

Annoying:
-In shortcut editor switching to 'none' does not always work
-Configure shortcuts is messing with ctrl+left and ctrl+right shortcuts for moving in text and also ctrl+a for selecting all in kwrite. The reassign question does not seem to work correctly (pops up when default shortcuts are assigned to default values).
-Text is sometimes very hard to read when something is selected and active but not focused (almost same color on foreground as background) (default breeze). Also similar effects arise with various combinations of oxygen/breeze styles.
-Unable to move entry's on classic start menu with KDE Menu Editor (tried to move System Settings to the top but that has no effect)
-Disabling all baloo search plugins is not saved

Plain buggy:
-System Settings seg faults often
-Plasma crashed once

Just curious:
-Size of start menu icon differs when a "default panel" is added to second screen (this icon is larger)

Opinions (things that are in the way of getting work done):
-Hard to see where one window ends and another starts (because of lack of window border)
-Hard to read selected text (to little contrast between selection color and white text, selection color to bright). (Easily changed!)
-Ended up changing back to oxygen because of GTK applications and the new breeze icon set.

In summary less problems then expected, clearly not ready for prime time but the base system works.

Edit: Problem with windows started by global shortcut not getting focus went away by itself.

Is there a frameworks version of "kdegraphics-thumbnailers" somewhere in the AUR? I couldn't find anything with the same name, maybe it has changed to something else?

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

After further testing of sound/video, here's my results:
-The new kmix is really buggy, messes up volumes and crashes. Right now I can't open it so back to alsamixer for volume control.
-Plasma is leaking a lot of memory, after few hours it uses 700mb after the relevant programs were closed.
-Konsole randomly gets stuck at 100% cpu usage.
-VLC video playback has become buggy with video freezes, the taskbar shown above the fullscreen video and lots of tearing.
-Things become laggy and sluggish like scrolling a simple page of text in Firefox.

Also:
-Lost kdeconnect (have not looked into it yet, perhaps there is a way to make it work again)
-No GUI for the UFW firewall as no port for KF 5 exists.

About KDE I can only say this: Heart is in the right place but available resources for QA does not meet ambition. Perhaps in 1-2 years time KF 5 will be great, but right now it is not.
