[solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Hi guys,

So I'm a little perplexed. One day my system just started quitting xorg. I had it to startx upon login, but that would just flash my monitors black and then return my to a login prompt. So I went in and tried to analyse the log file but I didn't have much luck. I'm going to post it here and hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

I have my system fully up to date, I really have no idea why one day it would just stop working.

I saw that at line 568.521 there was a failure of ACPI but I really am not sure how that would affect my system.

Only thing I can think of in conjunction with this issue, is that I setup my foldingathome client to be enabled in systemctl. It started making weird graph glitches in my tty so I disabled it. Not sure if they are linked or not.

Thanks!

Please paste your .xinitrc. What driver are you using?

    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Why are your drivers that low? Your card is still supported by the latest nvidia drivers, don't know if there is a direct correlation with your problem, but there's no reason for you to be using that old of a driver

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

I didn't actually realize until now that there were updated drivers. I will update those and report back.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Please see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing for how to determine the correct driver for your card.
If you get confused, blame nvidia ;P

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

I uninstalled nvidia-304xx and installed nvidia with needed dependencies. This is the output I get from running 'startx'. It does the exact same thing, looks like it's going to load screen flickers and then kicks me back saying it was terminated successfully.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Try logging the output of i3 https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/I3#xinitrc although I'm not sure if it's being started at all.

That means X works, but has nothing to run and has therefore shut down. Which means that for some reason your .xinitrc isn't being picked up. No clue what that reason might be.

This might be the case if $XINITRC doesn't match the location of .xinitrc.

Otherwise, I would add something like

touch $HOME/debug_i3_start

at the beginning of .xinitrc, then something like

touch $HOME/debug_i3_pre
i3
echo $? > $HOME/debug_i3_post

at the end, to determine if

  1. your .xinitrc is actually executed,

  2. xinit actually reaches the i3 line, and

  3. i3 doesn't make xinit quit in the middle of its execution

(of course the files debug_i3_* shouldn't exist in your home folder prior to that).

EDIT

The idea is of course to see at what point the said files are not created (and thus xinit doesn't execute that part of .xinitrc)... it's kind of the equivalent of printf debugging.
If you see that it reaches i3 correctly, the problem must either lie with your driver (but I doubt that), or i3 is doing something funky.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

so I did what ayekat suggested. Here are the contents of my .xintrc as it stands currently

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi
touch ~/debug_i3_start
setxkbmap dvorak
xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1920x0 --rotate left --output HDMI-0 --off --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x600 --rotate normal --output DVI-I-0 --off --output DP-1 --off --output DP-0 --off
numlockx &
sh ~/.fehbg &
#compton -b --backend xrender --config /dev/null
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
echo $? > ~/debug_i3_pre
exec i3
echo $? > ~/debug_i3_post

I think that is basically what you were saying to do correct?

So when I then look at the contents of ~/ I see the newly created debug_i3_pre which contains "0" but ~/debug_i3_post isn't created. I tried reinstalling i3 through pacman and it said that it had an upgrade but after that it didn't seem to do anything.

Thoughts? Issue with i3 it would seem? maybe I just need to purge it and reinstall?

That's not surprising, since everything after the

exec i3

line isn't executed (since the .xinitrc shell execution process is replaced by i3, see also exec (3)).
Anyway, we see that i3 is executed, so I would suggest to log the output of i3 as suggested by karol.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Here is the output from the log file

i3: error while loading shared libraries: libEGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

looks like it might have something to do with the nvidia lib 32 package?

Do you have that file?
Yes, you need either mesa or nvidia. What package and what version do you have installed?

I installed the lib32-nvidia package, however I am still getting the same error in the log file.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

That file is not provided by lib32-nvidia.  Do you have that file on your system?

$ pkgfile libEGL.so.1

extra/mesa-libgl
extra/nvidia-304xx-libgl
extra/nvidia-340xx-libgl
extra/nvidia-340xx-utils
extra/nvidia-libgl
extra/nvidia-utils
multilib/lib32-mesa
multilib/lib32-mesa-libgl
multilib/lib32-nvidia-304xx-libgl
multilib/lib32-nvidia-340xx-libgl
multilib/lib32-nvidia-340xx-utils
multilib/lib32-nvidia-libgl

You installed lib32-nvidia...it does not include the file that is giving you the trouble. pkgfile is a list of the packages that include that file.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

libEGL.so.1 is provided by mesa-libgl or nvidia-libgl. Since you're using the nvidia driver, you should have nvidia-libgl installed. To be exact, the *-libgl packages contain symlinks to the real libraries that are in /usr/lib/mesa and /usr/lib/nvidia

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Yeah, I do have nvidia-libgl installed, which contains the libEGL.so.1 package. That makes sense. So I guess that still brings me back to why am I getting that error from i3?

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Sorry If I caused any confusion by saying you need either mesa or nvidia - I didn't mean 'mesa' and 'nvidia' packages, I meant it as different libgl implementations.
nvidia has different packages depending on which card and what architecture do you use.

Edit: Please post the output of

locate libEGL.so.1

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

The output of the following might also help:

ldd `which i3` | grep EGL

Then confirm that the library is at the sample place as the path after the "=>" in the output of this command.

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

Locate command yields

Locate: can not stat () '/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db' : no such file or directory

Ldd 'which i3' | grep EGL yields

./which i3: no such file or directory

Something seems odd here....

Re: [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

You used quotes rather than backticks.  Copy and past my code, or use this:

ldd $(which i3)

or just the following if i3 is where it should be:

ldd /usr/bin/i3
