nm-applet crashing

When i start nm-applet i get this

(nm-applet:4957): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:2:16: Theming engine 'adwaita' not found

if I use Mobile broadband it seems to crash randomly with the message

[1]+ Segmentation fault (core dumped) nm-applet

This can occur seconds after connecting or after half an hour (and anything in between). It never crashes when connected to wifi.

What should I do to resolve this? I'm running an updated x64 system.
