[SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

Hello all,

Not sure when, but all of a sudden, I don't have sound on the web.  I run Arch 64 w/Chromium, and I no longer have audio on Youtube, or other sites that produce audio, I can no longer watch movie trailers.  sad

Any idea what you look for?

I've seen this link https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115645 but it didn't help me.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

did you run alsamixer on the command line and check if every channel is unmuted?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

yup, checked that, and sound works everywhere else; games, movies, etc, just not in the browser, which is odd, because this worked 2 weeks ago.  I just noticed it not working last week.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

of course you should try fixing your problem with alsa first. But if everything fails you could try switching to pulseaudio:

enable [multilib] repo in pacman.conf
rc.d stop alsa
remove alsa from your daemonsarray in rc.conf (or just !alsa it to comment it)
rmmod snd_pcm_oss
remove snd_pcm_oss from modules array in rc.conf (if its there)
pacman -S pulseaudio
pacman -S pulseaudio-alsa
pacman -S lib32-libpulse lib32-alsa-plugins
pacman -S lib32-alsa-plugins lib32-libcanberra-pulse
(KDE only) yaourt -S kdeplasma-addons-applets-veromix (nice mixer widget in panel)
then if smplayer: Preferences -> General -> Audio -> Output driver -> pulse
if vlc: Preferences -> Audio -> Output module -> pulseaudio audio output
flash should work out of the box and normally pulse is started automatically for most desktop environments

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

@yaffare,

What should I look at in Alsa to try and fix it?  I've thought about installing Firefox (using gnome 3 btw) to see if youtube plays.  If it doesn't, I may go for the uninstall/re-install of alsa.

anything else I should look at?  Which sound system is preferred, Alsa or Pulseaudio?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

firefox and chromium using the same flashplayer.

alsa is preferred. but if its not working, try pulse.

do you have the kernel modules snd_seq_oss, snd_pcm_oss, snd_mixer_oss enabled?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

2 reboots later and a mute/unmute/mute all channels via alsamixer and now works.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

Spoke too soon.  went online on Sunday to watch the new movie trailers, and BAM, once again, no sound in chromium on movie trailer sites.

went back into alsamixer and played flip the mute channels, nothing helped this time.

going to install firefox to see if it's a chromium or flash thing.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

I have exactly same problem!
I reinstalled flashplugin several times. Sometimes it did help, but after a short period the problem occurs again.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

It seems to me that after every reboot I need to go into alsamixer and mute all channels then unmute all channels.  I'm still looking into it.  I'm wondering if it's not set as the default sound card, which I know I set it to when I originally installed Arch.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

had the same problem but only under my account. under my wife's account flash worked. we are using analog output by default and it stopped working suddenly only under my profile. alsamixer - everything enabled, unmuted etc. in both profiles no .asoundrc. so I compared our profiles and found the difference. in ~/.pulse/*-default-sink and *-default-source I had alsa_output.pci-xxxxxxx-HDMI-stereo but my wife had alsa_output.pci-xxxxxxx-analog-stereo. I changed it to analog and after re-logon flash works like a charm wink

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

I have similar problems. I can't get sound in flash. But smplayer and deadbeef and probably other softwares work. And after using them to play a video or a piece of music,if I open a new tab containing flash, it works! It looks like running smplayer or deadbeef triggers something.

Removing ~/.macromedia solved the problem for me.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in Chromium/Flash

I had this issue in Fedora. I had to open up pavucontrol, press play on a youtube video and then chromium browser volume options opened up on the playback tab...everything was down so I turned it up. This was driving me crazy. Took hours to figure out. Not sure why the chrome volume options only showed up while the video was playing, but hey. Hope this helps someone....I know it's a super old post and is marked as solved, but not everyone was able to solve it the way previously mentioned so I thought I would share.
