Hello everyone!
After my Arch box is getting more and more used as production system (just happens...) I get a bit paranoid. So in addition to system backups (working on that...) I would really like to set up a second safe boot option with the linux-lts package...
Now I do have two questions about that:
1. If I install linux-lts and nvidia-lts how do I make sure that nvidia-lts is used by the lts boot option? Or is this a default behaviour anyway?
2. As I use one disk with btrfs and I understand that the btrfs modules change a lot, - is it safe to use the linux-lts kernel to access a btrfs disk that has been in use with the standard arch linux kernel?
I would really appreciate some hints here before I set it all up...
thx a lot,
piedro

1. If you have configured your system for nvidia drivers everything should work. nvidia-lts provides the nvidia kernel module for -lts kernel and it will be loaded on boot as usual.
2. from btrfs wiki:
The filesystem disk format is no longer unstable, and it's not expected to change unless there are strong reasons to do so.
It's recommended to use most recent kernel with btrfs, but you shoud have no problems using your btrfs partitions with linux-lts. That is unless they realize something is seriously broken and change the file system format. Just don't enable any possible new optional btrfs features that aren't supported by the -lts kernel.

Make sure you test your backup setup (both configs & data backups and the -lts stuff) before you need it. Check if it works as expected.

In my case, it never worked. I installed lts kernel and nvidia for it, after boot nvidia module could not start X or itself. Black screen and only terminal.

Thanks!
That seems to be a bit mixed messages here...
@ooo: I know about the Btrfs Wiki but there's a boot preventing bug again introduced with newest kernel 3.19.x ...
From the Btrfs WIki also:
Alert: bug in 3.19.1, 3.14.35, 3.18.9
mount can hang due to a deadlock introduced in stable kernel series, see Gotchas for more
I guess I just have to try to find out about the nvidia stuff then ...
thx for reading,
p.

I though the question was whether you could have issues using btrfs partitions with linux-lts after using it with newer kernel, which should be very unlikely as I tried to explain.
It's not uncommon that major btrfs bugs slip in to kernel releases, but they are usually fixed quickly. Looks like a fix is already scheduled to 3.19.4 for the deadlock mentioned. for the record I've been using my btrfs partitions on 3.19.3 for ~2weeks without any lockups or other issues.

Alright then!
I'll try on the weekend...
