Alsa ThinkPad 600X problems

Hey all,

I just recently installed Arch...kind of my first real linux experience if you don't count FC5 and ubuntu.  Well...here's the deal.

I have a ThinkPad 600X and installed the Alsa drivers on it to get some sound.  I'm running Enlightenment as a desktop...and it's recognizing the card as a cs46xx sound card.  I went out and downloaded the alsa-driver source and compiled from that with what some other guy said to do.

Now...I don't know how to get it to load the sound modules automatically, but if I open a terminal and put in:

modprobe snd_cs46xx
amixer set Master 75 unmute
amixer set PCM 75 unmute

I can open any program I want and get sound as long as I use that terminal window to open it.

Anyone have any ideas or come across this before?  I've tried adding the module in the rc.conf and also tried it in the modprobe.conf with no luck.  Really I have no idea what I'm doing and I need some help...I'm running kernel 2.6 and the latest Arch release...ahh...7?

thanks.

Re: Alsa ThinkPad 600X problems

I can see from all the oss errors in your dmesg that your modprobe.conf needs to be emptied.  I had a weird problem with my sound that tpowa was able to guide me through.  Check it out here and see if it solves your problem:

Sweet...actually yeah reading over that helped a bunch.  To let anyone that doesn't catch this know:

modprobe.conf loads OSS stuff for sound and when you try to install ALSA drivers for the sound, you have to go clean out your modprobe.conf...IE remove the lines that the OSS drivers want to use.  After that it works great.  Thanks viniosity.

Jazzplayer9:

Just to let a fellow Thinkpad 600X user know, if you experience any hardware probs (ie pcmcia card not detected, happens with my prism54 wireless card etc) then you may have to add:
pci=noacpi to your bootloader line.

Just giving you a heads up big_smile

You shouldn't install alsa-driver from source over the current installation unless you know what you are doing. Alsa drivers are included in the kernel26 or kernel26beyond package. Just read the alsa wiki page.
