Using testing, after a full (pacman -Syu) upgrade, something killed my desktop.
I reversed out all the gfx driver updates, assuming that was the problem (nvidia) but no change. Fortunately, I update at least twice a day, so it's easy to keep track, but I'm blowed if I know what tonight's problem is:
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded curl (7.42.1-1 -> 7.43.0-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded git (2.4.3-1 -> 2.4.4-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded gnutls (3.4.1-1 -> 3.4.2-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded libtirpc (0.3.1-1 -> 0.3.2-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded lua (5.3.0-2 -> 5.3.1-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded netctl (1.10-2 -> 1.11-1)
[2015-06-17 22:36] [ALPM] upgraded opencl-nvidia (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded lib32-nvidia-utils (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded lib32-nvidia-libgl (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded lib32-opencl-nvidia (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded nvidia-utils (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded nvidia-libgl (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
[2015-06-17 22:50] [ALPM] upgraded nvidia (352.09-1 -> 352.21-1)
Downgraded everything and I'm back, so where's the problem? I can't see anything except nvidia that would cause the problem, but downgrading just the nvidia stuff doesn't work.

"killed your desktop" is not especially helpful. I assume (you should have included this) that you have [testing] enabled and that you aren't subscribed to arch-dev-public (which is highly recommended for [testing] users), in which case it was libtirpc that broke PAM. That package has now been removed from the repo.

I had similar issue recently. The recent 'libtirpc' from [testing] breaks PAM. libtirpc has been pulled off from testing since then.
I recovered my system by booting from usb stick and reinstalling libtirpc version 0.3.1.
