(SOLVED) 5.1 sound over S/PDIF and ALSA

Hello,

I've decided to make a switch to using (and learning) Linux for my computer needs instead of Windows. I've been using Arch for about a week now and so far I love it.

Since I play a lot of movies with 5.1 sound I want to get the ALSA configuration just right but at the moment I am struggling with that. I would like some help with that from some of the more experienced Arch users. (yes i've read the Wiki and tried a lot of stuff, but still no luck)

Here is my configuration
- I've got a Realtek ALC889 on a MSI X58 Pro-e mobo which is connected via optical S/PDIF to an amplifier.
- I am running Arch Linux with KDE5 (Plasma)
- I tried PulseAudio to try and fix the sound but it didn't work out so I removed it and reinstalled ALSA

The problem
- At the moment I only get sound from FR and FL speakers but what I want is 5.1 sound and DD/DTS/AC3

Please don't forget to post the solution if you found one yourself, to help people who might run into the same issue as asked to in [1],[2].
