[Solved] Strange wifi problem

Hello, ArchLinux community! This is my first post in this forum (I just joined today), but I'm not exactly a Linux noob. I have been using Linux for over a year, and I switched from Mint to Arch some months ago.

I have the Edimax EW-7811Un Wi-Fi USB Adapter, and it works perfectly fine in 4.0.7-2. I needed to install dialog and wpa_supplicant first, but now, all I need to do is run wifi-menu to connect to my WPA/WPA2 connection.

But here's the problem. My computer is sitting on the floor 5 feet away from the router so I could get an ethernet connection while re-installing Arch. (I know I can simply update it with pacman. I had a wierd problem and had to re-install Arch from scratch.) I can now unplug the ethernet cable, boot into Arch, and run wifi-menu to get connected. But when I take my computer back upstairs to my bedroom, it no longer works. This is only 40 feet from the router, and I know it should be able to work because it worked fine before on a Windows machine in my bedroom using the same adapter. When I run wifi-menu, it shows my router in the list, but when I hit OK, it doesn't fully connect. I'm not sure if there is a log I should check, but I am using the i3 WM, with i3bar running, and i3bar shows information about the current networks. When my computer is close to the router, i3bar's wi-fi section lights up green, telling me that I am connected at address 192.168.2.7. When I try to connect upstairs, it lights up green (not yellow?), but says "no IP". Then it disconnects after maybe 15 seconds.

This is all the relative information I can think of. If I am missing anything, let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Never mind! I followed the advice from the wiki and installed 8192cu-dkms from the AUR. I am posting this from my bedroom, using wi-fi. big_smile

Re: [Solved] Strange wifi problem

Excellent!  And Welcome to Arch Linux.

One thing, though.  As only you know when something is really solved, we ask you to mark the thread as solved when you are ready.  Just edit your first post in the thread, you will have an option to edit the thread title.  Just add [Solved] to the beginning of the title.

Thanks.
