I've encountered the same bug and I've found that lightworks outputs error logs. You can find mine at http://hastebin.com/oriwejateh.vbs and http://hastebin.com/esiheliman.js.
After some googlin' I've found a solution used on debian (http://www.lwks.com/index.php?option=co … d=81#92564), but I haven't tried it.
If you do it can you post the result?

The lightworks logs folder is in you home folder. Now I'm at work, so I'll try to debug this night... if you don't do that before me :-P.

This problems is only in Awesome. In KDE it works normal.
In Awesome I can't close Lightworks and it covers all desktops, so I can't use other applications till Lightworks is open.

Try to clear all LightWorks config files you can find in your home. I'm using Gnome and I found that, after upgrading from lwks to lwks-beta, lwks-beta opens fullscreen, but after clearing lwks config files it opens in windowed mode.

Hey, I'm trying what's suggested in the link that I posted, but I can't get lightworks working. Can you say me wich packages for openssl and curl have you installed and wich commands did you used?

Download deb packages. You can find links in the bottom of the page. Unpack them and just copy necessary files into lightworks directory like in the instruction.

If anybody needs to install Lightworks without startup issues, there is a https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/lwks-openssl/ (created by me).
It uses older versions of OpenSSL 1.0.1-i and CURL 7.38 as a workaround, until Lightworks devs resolve http://dev.lwks.com/issues/397.
Hope it will help somebody.
Cheers,
Marcin
