Pleased to announce the release of the latest conkywx version
For users of other distros - kindly visit my Blog and leave comments and feedback there - thanks
For changes and updates - refer to the documentation released with the program. In a terminal window type conkywx --help . You will see an improved help on the browser.
In the images you can see the CIMSS image on the top with wind barbs. Based on your selection in the conkywx config file - the CIMSS image will zoom on to any existing storm system.
The moon changes dynamically to reflect the current position and the anemometer and windvane are animated - the pointer moves to simulate real time environment ;-)
To have many options for weather multiple sites are supported and data is dynamically merged. You can have current condition from one and forecast from another - though wunderground and METAR only support current conditions - but you still have forecast data from others.
Note:
As many users are using various conky variants - conky is no longer a dependency but however - conky is still required. Please ensure conky - in what ever form - is in fact installed.
To reduce duplication of effort - conkywx man page now has basic information and has a link to the wiki which is normally being updated real time as changes to conkywx are being made. A local copy is now available in the installation.
In some cases to have conky restart automatically you may need to give a sleep 30 - delay in your conky start script
if you are using Gnome 3 - own_window_type in the *conkyrc.sh needs to be changed to normal, desktop or dock - which ever works for your Desktop
If you find the templates out of kilter - first change the xftfont in the rc file and see how that goes before changing other values.
Here is the conkywx AUR package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/conkywx/
Feedback please - Thanks

Hi Paramvir,
Thanks for your great work. I finally installed version 3 on my Arch/Openbox machine. My old version was not working for months due to the changes in the weather sources. After a few hours of struggle with the .conf file, I finally managed to have conkywx 3 working.
I still have a small problem :
As you can see on this screen capture, although I have conkywx running and displayed on screen, the conkywx assistant doesn't "see" a "used template config file". At the same time, "ps aux | grep conkywx" shows
the conkywx instance running :
[alain@rdc2010 ~]$ psx conkywx
alain 2652 4.5 0.5 29364 17128 ? S 14:44 0:04 conky -c /home/alain/conkywx.examples/short-02-conkyrc.sh
Is this normal ?
Anyway, thanks again for these nice conky's

Hi Alain - great to hear from you
I know you will not be able to generate a debug file - so any information you can provide will help.
Can you check the folder
/home/alain/.config/conkywx/conkywx_internal
In this folder do you see any file with a number_id.
In a terminal window - if you type
echo $PPID
do you get any numbers?
Also if you run the program from a terminal window - do you see any errors?
How are you running conkywx - are you using local locations for the files or are you using stand alone version or the installed version from the AUR...
Thank you for your message - feedback like yours helps in fixing such elusive issues..
cheers

OK - I created your file structure - with your config file - got Nancy weather - and yes - Conkywx Assistant worked - I got the config file.
Conkywx Assistant
-----------------------------------------------------
1 template config file(s) in use found.

Exiting conkywx assistant... have a fantastic day!!! ;-)
Obvious question - are you using Bash as your shell?
Have a look at /usr/share/conkywx/conkywx.sh file - the bash script.
There is a subroutine ask_config line # 1382
on line 1397 you have this code
OLDIFS=$IFS; IFS=$'\n'
id_files=($(find ${conkywx_internal_dir}/*_id -type f -printf "%f\n"))
IFS=$OLDIFS
for d in "${!id_files[@]}"
do
if [[ -s "${conkywx_internal_dir}/${id_files[$d]}" ]]; then
OLDIFS=$IFS; IFS=$'\n'
input_data=($(< "${conkywx_internal_dir}/${id_files[$d]}"))
IFS=$OLDIFS
fi
# in_data=( ${input_data//|/ } )
proc_ppid+=( "${input_data[0]//\"}" )
proc_conf+=( "${input_data[1]//\"}" )
proc_trend+=( "${input_data[2]//\"}" )
done
In this you will see - we are storing information in the 5 arrays: id_files, input_data, proc_ppid, proc_conf and proc_trend
below 'done' - the last line in the code above type
msgout "${id_files[*]}"
and see the output when you run your conky script in a terminal window - this should have the file 2652_id - though now it would have some other number - this is the PPID of the starting process. - the other 'proc' arrays will have information contained in 2652_id file.
All this really comes into play when you have multiple instances of conkywx showing weather - so each instance will have it's own conf file. If it works for all it must work for one
Let me know what you get
cheers

Hi,
Yes, I use bash as my shell.
I did the mod you suggest in /usr/share/conkywx/conkywx.sh :

In that conkywx_internal listing above you notice no file *_id ??? like below:
-rw-r--r-- 1 param users 128 May 15 15:43 3420_id
-rw-r--r-- 1 param users 6 May 14 19:05 conkywx_new_version_test
drwxr-xr-x 2 param users 4.0K Dec 29 08:12 trends
-rw-r--r-- 1 param users 99 Dec 14 2012 READ_ME
I am talking about a file like 3420_id. 3420 was the PPID of conkywx.sh when it ran at that moment. The next time it runs as weather update this PPID will change and so will this file.
Please confirm you do not see any _id file or is it showing sometime ???
Edit:
I also have many conky instances - weather, tides, clock, seismic data and surface images - some of this will come in the next release
cheers

Great now everything is clear
I am using big-luamix-conkyrc.sh - it is there in conkywx 3 and so are the surface images along with the system information on the right - though no tides, clock or seismic info - work in progress huahahahaha
I shall probably be missing over the weekend - but the thing to look at in conkywx.sh is check_for_running_wx_process() line 428 - that is where the file is created.
cheers

OK. Have a great weekend and take your time : it is not a big problem (for me) as far as I can monitor the weather on my conkywx.
Thanks and let me know if I can be of any help.

Pleased to announce the release of the latest conkywx version
For users of other distros - kindly visit my Blog and leave comments and feedback there - thanks
For changes and updates - refer to the documentation released with the program. In a terminal window type conkywx --help . You will see an improved help on the browser.
conky version 1.10x RECOMMENDED though will work with conky 1.09x as well
Huge changes to get things to work with conky 1.10x
Most short comings of this version of conky are handled using lua scripts
conky_startup - this handles the startup issues - if your update interval is 5 seconds - conky updates that conky config in 5 * 2 seconds [10 seconds ] - so we update it such that your conky starts like on steroids
conky_pre_exec - this handles anything that needs to be done only ONCE - or unless updated manually - same as 1.9x
conky_if_running - checks the pidof the required process - same as 1.9x
conky_top_name - handles the top process for the AUR versions
All templates modified to work with both conky versions
Earth quake/ Seismic has new options to set Alarms that will show up alarms via the conkywx system, the location in question also flashes in the Seismic display
Seconday PWS for xml_ID - when the primary stops or has stale data.
Some forecast handling changes.
Some bug fixes.
A New music player - wx media player - plays in the terminal and even though you can see progress in conky - can be used on it's own. Written in bash and lua - very light and can handle huge number of tracks - uses mplayer as backend.
Multiple sites supported to get options for current and forecast weather
Type conkywx --help in a terminal window after installation to see improved help on a web browser.
To have many options for weather multiple sites are supported and data is dynamically merged. You can have current condition from one and forecast from another - though wunderground and METAR only support current conditions - but you still have forecast data from others.
Note:
Please use conky 1.10x if you have not yet embarked on that adventure . It is way better than the older version

If you find the templates out of kilter - first change the xftfont in the rc file and see how that goes before changing other values.
The package is at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/conkywx/
Feedback please - Thanks
EDIT:: I meant to just copy the FOUR release and make a new post but posted here grrrrrr X-[

Do you have any idea or workaround ?

Hi Paramvir,
I have a problem here, since the last perl update on arch :Now, when I run conkywx, I have this error :

Hi Alain
One of my amigos testing conkywx also had exactly the same issue...
He downgraded his perl....
OK that perhaps would be final course of action - and since I have not faced this issue - some other ideas come to mind...
You could change the mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and then do sudo pacman -Syyu
This should sort the issue other wise - unninstall perl and then reinstall it fresh.
my version of perl is : This is perl 5, version 22, subversion 0 (v5.22.0) built for x86_64-linux-thread-multi
cheers

Hi Paramvir,
Thanks for your quick reply. Since the Perl update, my Perl stuff is a real mess ;-) I had problems with other program than conkywx.
I tried to repair "by hand" this perl stuff and upgraded the faulty modules.
I am not sure what I did exactly but, and that is the most important, conkywx works again without the /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/auto/Time/Piece/Piece.so error !
Great and thank you for your support.

Hey that is fantastic
You are most welcome...
Yup - sometimes we need to take the matter into our own hands

Conky Weather Program FIVE Released
Pleased to announce the release of the latest conkywx version
Woohoo!
For whatever reasons, the 4.x release didn't work for me, but 5.0 is working fine!
I ran into the same perl problem with the Perl_xs_apiversion_bootcheck symbol. The problem is that there are functions that have been moved into the core repository, and the dependencies changed a bit. This script, shamelessly stolen from this thread, finds the packages now provided by core, strips the version info, and removes them from the system.
pacman -Qi perl |
sed -n /Provides/,/Depends/p|
sed '$d' |cut -f 2 -d: |
perl -lne 's/=[\d\.]+/\n/g;s/[ \t]//g;print' |
sed '/^$/d' |
xargs -n1 \
sudo pacman -R --noconfirm
At this point, all seems well except that if I run conky manually, I keep seeing this error:
Conky: Unable to load image '3,3,5,3,2,2,0,0,2,3'
Is there a way to find out what this is referring to?
Thanks. Paramvir - I'm really happy to have this working again!

Hey Joe that is excellent !!!
It is probably one of the trend graphs. That looks like the normalised string of numbers used for graphing in lua.
Try increasing the text_buffer_size - it is a value in bytes in the conkyrc file
Oh and which conky version are you on ??? 1.9x or 1.10x ??
If that does not work - you can mail me the debug file.
In a terminal type conkywx and choose option 4 - the prompts will guide you and in the conkywx tmp folder you should have the compressed debug file.
Great to hear from you - and do try out the wx media player lol
cheers

I'm on conky 1.9 via the conky-lua package. I'll have to see if I can get that up to conky 1.10 as I use a lot of rings in my display, or see if I can install conky and lua separately.
Changing the text_buffer_size didn't change anything. Interestingly enough, I don't think I have any trend graphs in my setup, but I've likely overlooked something.
Thanks again for the continued work on conkywx!

You probably have all the lua installed that you will need - just come up to 1.10.1 and you will be surprised - this is the better and faster conky by a very large margin.
if_running and top_name both are working fine in this release. You would only require to use the the two work a rounds left - conky_startup and conky_pre_exec.
cheers

I've been insanely busy with work and haven't had time to look at this, but can report that removing conky-lua and installing conky 1.10 (with lua itself still installed) caused my ring graphs to break, and still showed the error mentioned above. Reinstalling conky-lua got the rings back and conkywx is still working, so I'll circle back around to this sometime, but not soon.
Thanks again for the help and the great program!

That is because you need bindings to cairo [http://cairographics.org/] - that is how all the graphics magic like rings etc get drawn.

Hi, Paramvir and everybody out there,
I was attempting to compile and install your latest version of conkywx from the AUR and ran into issues. I honestly have no idea if this is an issue with how my system is set up with makepkg but I haven't had any issues compiling anything else except for this. This is what I get in the terminal when I attempt to compile.
