Routing issue - How to avoid a route loop?

Setup

• Main Router: gateway router to the internet:  192.168.10.1

• Route on Main Router: 10.10.224.0    192.168.10.2    255.255.224.0

• VPN Gateway router: 192.168.10.2

• Network subnet: 255.255.255.0

The VPN Gateway routes through the internet router to connect to the VPN.   On my main router I have a route setup to send all traffic for a specific ip range out the VPN interface.  The problem is that if the VPN goes down no device on my network can route to that specific ip range.   It gets stuck in a loop of 192.168.10.2 -> 192.168.10.1 -> 192.168.10.2 -> ...

The other problem is that the VPN router itself cannot hit any IP on the range that i'm routing.  It gets stuck in a loop of 192.168.10.2 -> 192.168.10.1 -> 192.168.10.2 -> ...

There is only 1 interface on the VPN Gateway.
