Action on disk full

Hi.
What's the modern way to monitor a filesystem free space? Is it still running `df` in cron?

If it's a workstation with a graphical desktop environment, I like conky for this. I've also got mine set up to poll other systems on the LAN through SSH and display their free space, too.
