plasma-pa sound is usseles at this moment, it doesn't bring anything new. I'm still using kmix, but kmix is incomplete for a total pulseaudio control. I can't change "at the fly" between my microphone or my monitor of stereo internal sound card a.k.a stereo mix during a recording session. In fact, stereo mix it does not even appear in kmix, so i have to use pavucontrol (gtk app) for that purpose.

I'm completely dissatisfied with the update to 5.4. There is a slew of regressions and new errors, yet again.
- drag and drop from and to wine apps stopped working
- tooltips from icon-only task manager randomly pop up without me triggering them
- logout doesn't crash anymore (after what, 2 releases?), but still takes about 30 seconds
- kwin gets slower with every release so that i have to disable compositing just to get stutter free video playback - at the cost of vsync
- dolphin now crashes when moving files from my ext4 to my ntfs drive for some reason, with an "access denied" message
Personally, I can't understand how someone can push out releases like that and feel good about it.
I mean, come on. No matter how free and voluntarily the software is developed, there has to be some sort of quality control before a release.
This whole KDE5 endeavor is a total trainwreck so far.

I agree the quality control with KDE is getting pretty bad (I could name a lot of other regressions but won't). However it's free software so it's on us all to step up and do something about that. If nothing else we need to run the beta releases and file bug reports.
I agree though that I think that things should be tested far more and if there are severe regressions the old release should be used as opposed to just pushing through the new buggy version and calling it progress.

It's understandable when hard to find bugs go unnoticed and slip into a release, and I'm actively reporting them. But those I listed I've found within the first few hours of using plasma 5.4.
You'd have to willingly ignore them during the development and testing to not notice them. Releasing them in this state just goes against my personal ethos.

i finally took the plunge and removed any holdpackages today for kde, and upgraded
after messing with settings and such, it seems fairly stable but i have a couple of questions
- konsole transparency doesnt seem to be working. compositing is active and working - inactive windows are transparent and other effects work, but in konsole i cant get background transparency to work, anyone else have this issue or know how to resolve?
- does anyone know how to get the widget monitors (cpu/network) to update at a quicker rate? it seems to be stuck at 1s updates, and i see no options to change this for either one. this is for the plasma widgets, i used to be able to go down to at least 0.1s on kde4.
- does anyone run kde5 pulseaudio free? i''m seeing qt5-multimedia, and phonon-qt5-gstreamer rely on libpulse, but i've been unable to build phonon-qt5-gstreamer :
/phonon-gstreamer/src/build-qt4/CMakeTmp/check_qt_visibility.cpp:1:27: fatal error: QtCore/QtGlobal: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
not sure what that's all about
i'm trying to build qt5-multimedia with libpulse removed currently, we'll see how it goes

You should use these plasmoids:

thanks, i dont like the look (or not being able to see each of the 4 cores separately on the cpu) but at least i can change the refresh rate now

Works here, I believe that konsole settings are not migrated automatically from the KDE4 version, so you'll have to configure your profile again to enable background transparency.

Only the new plasma-pa applet depends on pulseaudio. If you don't use pulseaudio, applications linking to libpulse shouldn't have any effect for you, so what's the problem?

Hello folks,
I am using Plasma 5 for about 5 o 6 months ago, and sometimes the dialog for logout/shutdown/restart does not appear. I can´t find any solution. Any help?
Thanks.

weird, i opened a new konsole window (same profile) and it worked, i guess something was off on the window I was using.

yeah, i just wanted to avoid having even libpulse on the system.

Is it possible to fully remove unneeded system tray entries such as clipboard? Pre-5.4 you just had to set the entries you don't want to see as hidden in the system tray settings. Now, there is an arrow symbol in the tray and when you click on it, it shows the hidden entries. I basically want to get rid of that arrow.

if you right click on system tray and go to systray properties -> uncheck the items you dont want does that not work?

All of the items are already unchecked. If I check them and click on OK, nothing changes. And when I look again in the settings, they are automatically unchecked again.

Someone mentioned something like that a while before. It does work as intended here, though, so might be some sort of a config bug.

anyone else having issues with kwin constantly running at 50+ cpu? i finally got all the applications working and the themes and appearance how i wanted, and I started experiencing freezing and crashes every few minutes. checking htop, kwin_x11 was running at 50-80% cpu permanently causing frequent crashes (with and without applications running).
i'm using an older nvidia card (nvidia-304xx) so i set compositing to opengl 2.0/glx thinking that would fix it but no go. i had to switch to lxde just to get a usable desktop (and i'm pretty tempted to just stick with lxde at this point). dolphin freezes on every folder change too. i'm seriously starting to regret upgrading from 4.x but the lack of upgrades there was frustrating as well.
what's the roadmap on kde? any major improvements coming along? i love kde, the look, the feel, but this is ridiculous. [/rant]
i'm going through the different kde wikis and kde userbase but i'm not seeing much about kwin issues or how to fix them.

I guess you're right. After a couple of reboots, it suddenly works correctly. I have no idea what changed the behaviour. At least, I did not intentionally change any config anymore.

Hi,
i remember having similiar problems i removed ~/.config/ksmserverrc and remove every file in ~/.config/session do this from tty after logging out from your KDE/Plasma session.
Warning (stating the obvious): This removes your current saved session.

Do you have the same problem with a new user?
this was on a clean profile. if i do absolutely no modifications/customizations to the windows/etc kwin will work for a couple of hours before it starts misbehaving. on my first attempt it was a clean profile but i customized windows, themes, etc. The problem mainly started when I set window behavior to strictly under mouse, that set kwin cpu usage to over 80% until i turned it off, but after that it pretty much stayed at 50% or over.
[edit] setting window behavior to focus follows mouse seems to calm kwin down quite a bit, i think that may be the main issue I'm having at the moment.

I didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if these small issues are already been reported:
a) conky disappears every time I click on the desktop and reappear when I click on a window
b) khotkeys doesn't save my custom shortcuts

I had a hard time, too, to make it work. These are my settings:
own_window yes
#own_window_class Conky
#own_window_type desktop
#own_window_type normal
own_window_type dock
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_colour 000000
own_window_argb_visual yes
#own_window_argb_value 0

Thanks, adventurer - I missed the "dock" option.
Anyway,it doesn't really work as expected, since sometimes the conky window is above a maximazed window (even when "below" is added to "own_window_hints").
It doesn't disappear, though.

^ Same here. It either disappears on click when using own_window_type desktop or appears above all windows even with the "below" hint..

dolphin4 is a real life saver. dolphin was using a lot of ram having previews on, dolphin4 smooth and minimal

I made my conky work as expected by using kwin rules to keep it below etc. Just using own_window_type = 'normal'

Ugh, with the baloo acting up (policykit1-kde error messages popping up even after setting the folder watch limit to 65536!), terrible theming of KDE 5 mainstay programs like dolphin, dolphin not starting until I click the icon to start it again, and other annoying niggles, I'm heading over lxqt until kde settles down. The transition to KDE 5 has not been a clusterf* like KDE 3>KDE 4, but it's like death by a thousand paper cuts with each major update.
