Did you try "pacman -Syu gnome" ?

Thanks lagagnon. I have now and it looks to have installed. Sorry to trouble your further (especially after such good quick help) but my reading of the pacman stuff on the wiki says -Syu is to update/upgrade. -S has successfully installed everything before now so I understood that as the install command. What have I misunderstood? Can you point me at any docs for me to get a better handle on it?

IF YOUR SYSTEM IS NOT UP TO DATE - YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. PACMAN -Syu *BEFORE* POSTING

As I've just installed - first time - then run pacman -Syyu less than 24 hours ago, that would appear somewhat assumptive. Thanks for the help in other threads but in the throat is unwelcome.

always upgrade (with pacman -Syu) before installing a package
Arch can change a lot in 24 hours. Updating before installing a new package is always a good idea. And if you encounter errors, making sure your system is up to date is the first troubleshooting step.

Agreed but I've updated several times and been installing on a new installation. It is a good idea with any distro. Head_on_a_Stick was letting his (somewhat misguided) assumptions get the better of him. I am neither new to linux nor to forums.

I think you're reading a lot into two quotes and a hyperlink..

Possibly. Apologies if that's so. But a quiet word may have been somewhat more diplomatic than a quick cut and paste of somethig in screeching capital letters.
In any event, whilst Gnome may be installed it is certainly not starting as a desktop gui. I am still convinced Arch is the solution I need. It fell into this laptop almost effortlessly. But getting it going where I need it, on the PC, is turning into a nightmare and there is still no end in sight. On reboot the system came up in console and I have not yet managed to find a search term that points me to a sensible spot in the wiki to help me get it running. Any pointers please?

Please read through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … ting_GNOME and open a new topic about your problem if you still can't get gnome to start at boot.
And please remember to mark this thread as solved.

Thanks once more, WorMzy. That was the link I needed. Gnome up and running when needed from the console and with a terminal available. Very much appreciated.
