Installing Arch (problems)

I'm completely new to Linux (have found Ubuntu a complete doddle to install but Mint wasn't...so, really out of my league here!). Just tried installing Arch now and got stuck here, with the following message:

[ 135.843530] Buffer I/0 error on dev sr(.), logical block (.), async page read

I have printed off a couple of step-by-step guides for installing Arch:

When I've tried to install Arch previously, I got stuck very early on in the process. The step-by-step guides didn't seem to have the relevant steps for me to progress. Just looking for some steps I can follow which will get me to the steps in the two guides above which will actually allow me to progress and install Arch.

I'm using an ISO on DVD. The PC I'm on now has about an 80GB HDD. Another computer I'm looking to install Linux on has about 950GB of space (it's an empty drive).

If I'm required to create partitions, it would be good to know what space I should allocate to each.

Basically, I'm after a step-by-step guide...which has the steps that I'm actually looking for.

P.S. I don't think that I got that error message at the top of my post the last time I tried to install Arch.

Re: Installing Arch (problems)

The Beginner's Guide is the only step by step guide you should be following.  Arch changes rapidly, so those random guides tend to be out of date.  The beginner's guide should be up to date and explains the process well.

Re: Installing Arch (problems)

circleface beat me posting to the link to the guide, so I'll just leave some other advice I had written

if you run into problems again post commands you have run as well as the error messages. Based on what you posted we have no idea how far you got with whatever directions you were following

That said, based on this posting I would suggest you think why you want to install Arch as a new-to-linux user. While it's possible to learn a lot doing so, if you're looking for step by step instructions without the research that would have at least pointing to the beginner's guide, you may be setting yourself up for more frustration. If you do decide to stick with it and need help, I also suggest you familiarize yourself with http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html to avoid too many problems on the forums
