[SOLVED] No ethernet connection, no networking devices

Hi everyone!

I have a Gateway machine with i5 and recently I had the problem that after a reboot I didn't have Ethernet connection.

Nm-applet says that no network devices are available. the command "ip link" shows only one entry, loopback. The NetworkManager.service is working correctly and with no errors or warnings. The command "lspci -k" says:

00.19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection (rev 06)

"uname -a" shows: Linux host 4.1.6-1-ARCH SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 17 08:52:28 CEST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Finally if I choose at the startup with advanced options (fallback initramfs) is the same.

I don't know where else to see, and I see no problem, but I am not and advanced arch user. By the way, I had only the ethernet connection in this machine.

Thanks in advance!

Look at the output of pacman -Qi linux.   Take note of the version number.  Does it match that of the kernel you are running (4.1.6.1)?

Yes it does:

"uname -a":

Linux host 4.1.6-1-ARCH...etc

"pacman -Qi linux":

Name: linux
Version: 4.1.6-1
Desc...etc.

Also, and if it is of any help here are the dmesg and journactl output files:

Sorry the media I use to share the files. I didn't know how to share them here.

Re: [SOLVED] No ethernet connection, no networking devices

It looks like the network is being instantiated.   The VirtualBox service is crashing, I wonder if it is taking the network with it.  Try disabling VirtualBox, however it is that you are staring it and its modules.

OTOH, I had missed this line:

 [ 8.585914] e1000e: probe of 0000:00:19.0 failed with error -2

Regardless, try it without VirtualBox.

You might also try powering all the way off and then rebooting.  Maybe even removing the battery and the power adapter after power off to really make the point.

First of all, thank you for the quick answers.  The pc is a desktop, so the reboot think is easy. I uninstalled all virtualbox related and now works like a charm. I had the virtualbox for a windows/office thing I had to do...and, like always Windows came to mess things up.

Also, and maybe obviously, the line:

 [ 8.585914] e1000e: probe of 0000:00:19.0 failed with error -2

is fixed.

I will try to work with another account for the virtualbox while I check why is failing like this.

I really thank you. Have a great day!
