I actually give it a shot every time Plasma makes an update and after a few days I get disappointed too and switch back to Fluxbox.
Sadly, that's how it's going to be until Plasma matures.

I used to do the same, but Plasma 5.4 is finally usable for me. Starting with a fresh configuration (I deleted ~/.kde*) I got a quite stable desktop (except for some hangs which are due to known bugs in the r600g driver of my Radeon VGA) with a good memory footprint and CPU usage. I finally got rid of KDE4, just missing some cool plasmoids like Lancelot and ComplexPlotter which probably will never be ported to QML, but overall I am very satisfied. Sure, here and there some bug appears, but nothing that gets in the way.

And when it will be mature, they will release Plasma 6 making it EOL just like KDE4.

How the heck should I know? Plasma had to reach 5.2 to leave Beta. Now we're on 5.4 and it's pretty close to being polished, even with a Wayland Developer Preview.
From this point on, I guess that on 5.5.0, we can hope to have some good progress and bug fixes, but I always prepare for the worst, so...

well looks like i'm getting the kactivities/plasmashell bug too
tried genericity's solution and that didnt work for me
killing kactivities/plasmashell fixes temporarily until i get a hard freeze on Xserver and have to either kill it with ctrl-alt-backspace or through a terminal
once i went back in, i could only launch a couple of applications (konsole/firefox) before i had another freeze
using cinammon/xfce as backup for now but anyone else have other solutions?

cleared ~/.cache/ and ran kbuildsycoca5 seems to have resolved the crashes, but kactivity/plasmashell still run at high cpu (until i kill kactivitymanager)

Try clear all recents in systemsettings.

I am on testing. After upgrading kservice package, my desktop went crazy, log in is really slow and taskbar is not working properly. I've downgraded kservice package from extra, and fixed these issues.

Yep. It's running kbuildsyscoca5 *constantly*. Instead of downgrading, I just renamed kbuildsyscoca5 to kbuildsyscoca5.sav, and everything is back to normal.

I'm having this problem too. Downgrading to 5.13 version in extra workarounded the issue.

kservice just updated again. Still the same thing. My workaround still works.
If there's anything I can do to help debug this, just ask. I can reproduce at will.

Have you restarted plasma after updating?

Nope! My bad. Just did and all is now well. Thanks!

For me akonadi crashes every few hours with a non specified imap resource...
The crash notification says that it is probably useless to developers...
It also does not show me which resource is crashing.
Is this a bug or how can I fix this?
thx, p.

Not yet. I use kvkbd for now.

Sorry if asked before, I googled a lot and couldn't find any information.
Since upgrading to 5.4 (and 5.4.1 too), gtk windows get stuck when I close them. The app actually stops running, but the image stays there, sometimes on top of everything. I also noticed that the plasma panel occasionally gets stuck.
I have an Asus laptop with both Intel (integrated) and Nvidia (dedicated) card, but am using just the Intel one. I already tried all combinations of UXA, SNA, GLX and EGL without difference.
I'm not really sure that this problem just affects gtk apps, but seems to.
I would really appreciate some help with this.
Thanks in advance.
I noted that the same happens with all dialogs (gtk, qt, etc) and even if XRender is selected.

I finally took the plunge and upgraded. Not particularly excited. Is there some way I can improve the performance of Kwin on an intel card? It's laggy and buggy in its animations.

I did have this sort of working, except for the speed. But now it is worse than when I first upgraded:
- walk-through-windows fails (it should show windows on all desktops, but only shows those on the current one), and it doesn't use the navigation effect which it should (it is just the plainish icon + text you get when things are struggling)
- the pager cannot be made into a small, compact thing in the panel - it insists on showing all desktops in a horizontal 1xwhatever row
- double-clicking on one of these is the only way to access another desktop
- Kile LaTeX user 'tags' have partially vanished (and I can't remember how to get them to work)
- applications are no longer placed on their default desktops
- transparency is no longer working at all - I tried every compositor option in the menu (was OpenGL 2, but also tried 3 and Xrender)
- trying to access some bits of system settings causes the display of that window to be corrupted and does nothing else
This is appalling timing for me. I know this is always a risk with Arch. But if anybody has a quickish fix to make the things usable, that would be great.

Anyone else have problems with the Dolphin after the upgrade of KDE Applications 15.08.1-1 ?
Mine crashes regularly when select multiple items, with the mouse or the keyboard.
EDIT: Was Baloo fault. Work around by moving ~/.config/baloo* files away.

And I have pdf thumbnails back! Lovely - didn't realise how crucial this is to me before now. Thanks.
If Kwin would smoothen out as well, I'd call this a win.

I am gonna have to abandon kde for now. CPU usage from plasma shell is just too damn high. I will have to either live with fan noise, burn off my laptop too soon, or find another DE.

Has anyone found a way to bring back "Recent documents" in kickoff "chronology" tab?
They're useless since plasma 5.4: if clicked, nothing happens...
