I had this problem recently and found this thread. None of the solutions worked, but finally managed to find a solution - start gnome-terminal via dbus-launch:
dbus-launch gnome-terminal
This solved the issue for me.

Don't necrobump, especially not for solved topics - your issue may be completely unrelated to the problem in the first post (especially in light of the dbus updates as mentioned on the home page).

I have this issue on a newly installed Arch, gnome and gnome-extra. Already uncommented en_US.UTF-8 in /etc/locale.gen, already had LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in /etc/locale.conf, already run sudo locale-gen, already rebooted the machine but localectl showed:
System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8
VC Keymap: n/a
X11 Layout: n/a
but don't know how to fix it.
