On the T400, how good is the performance graphic wise?

Excellent. I use compositing and my essential Compiz effects are wonderfully smooth: "Expose", "Show Desktop" and scrolling/resizing of windows even in Firefox.

glxgears gives me about 630fps. But this number is misleading: GTK/X acceleration is way more complex than rotating a few gears.

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

Beware that some Dell laptops ship with the Intel GMA 500 (Poulsbo) chipset. The "official" driver which Dell funded is a piece a crap, and Intel either doesn't have the manpower or doesn't care enough to release a proper driver. The GMA 500 is currently garbage and should be treated as such.

What do you think?
It has mostly intel hardware. Is there a way I can tell if the built it camera will be supported?

Hm...it's a nice choice but I would change ATI with Nvidia or Intel GPU (avoiding Intel GMA 500 obviously).

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

I would have to recommend Asus. They are a Taiwanese computer company and the laptop I currently have. The F8SN, is superb. Everything works out of the box(and after you install a little software depending on your laptop setup).

Compaq doesn't get much love but I've had a Presario v6000 for about 3 years that works great with Linux.

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

How is eMachines when it comes to linux support ? I am considering the option of buying this ultra cheap eMachines laptop (I think its e275) with Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 @ 2.2GHz with 1MB L2 cache, 160GB 5400RPM HDD, 1GB DDR2-800MHz RAM, and a 15-inch monitor. Has a card reader, bluetooth and wifi for connectivity.

Any centrino machine..Linux kernel plays nice with Intel.

Edit: uh-oh, gonna be harder and more confusing to tell as time moves forward:

As of January 7, 2010 the Centrino brand represents Intel Wi-Fi and WiMAX adapters. It is no longer a platform-marketing initiative from Intel. The new product line name for Intel wireless products is Intel Centrino Wireless.

I never really had the luxury of choosing my hardware and adapting the computer to my needs. Its more of me adapting to my computer!

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

Its not the brand, its more whats inside of the machine.
Simple(st) rule when it comes to Linux and notebooks: Buy Intel hardware. It works.

Thinkpads are always good (if they have intel graphics etc, not this crappy ATI stuff you can find in some models), but there are some other cool machines out there like the Samsung Q45 Danyal, which is one of the "near perfect" machines for me, because its very small and lightweight and still has all the features and performance of the bigger ones. And everything works out of the box on Arch, like suspend/resume, the webcam and the card reader for example smile I hope Samsung will produce a successor of it, currently you can get a refurbished one for around 500-600€ and a used one for around 250-350€.

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

Asus used to offer most of their netbook line with Linux preinstalled, but I'm not sure whether they still do that.

If you're getting a desktop computer, your best bet is, of course, to put it together yourself.

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

I've had great experiences with Dell.

As far as Apple goes, the support is kind of sketchy for brand new models, but it seems like after a few months everything works pretty well.

I bought a core2duo macbook nearly four years ago, and Arch ran perfectly right out of the box.

Re: What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

I am not sure if it's allowed to refresh this old topic, but it is still valid.

I have heard that Dell is the most Linux friendly. I have HP laptop and the only problem I have is the bluetooth module that is integrated with wifi which renders my bt mouse unusable, but to be honest bt mouse is misbehaving also in Windows.

In the next turn I would go for something very reliable like Toshiba, but Dells are also promising however I had no exposure to this brand too much so cannot say if it's reliable in terms of hardware.

Please share your current experience with various vendors.

It's not, and you have been here long enough to know better.

You should look at this topic if you want to know which laptop vendors have good track records.
