Mplayer shouldn't be forbidden, nor should links -g. The web is graphical now, browsing it without graphics is against it's structure.

Would be a nice livecd.
I'd say have a look at the "grml" text livecd distro. They have nice scripts as well, for example to easily make a cfg for mutt (newbies could do it).
I'd put in:
mutt
irssi - or another irc client, f.e. weechat (which goes to other chatnetworks trough a bitlbee server) - tmsnc is very nice for msn
elinks (it's not that bad to browse) and links2 -g
mpd-ncmpc
giftd-giftcurs
vim, nano
abcde
bittorent (i use bittornado but whatever)
mc
lftp
screen
cdw to burn cd's
...

Question, does qiv show in the terminal with svgalib or something? Also, is it possible to handle pdf's in a console?
Offline
theres a whole pile of commands to convert pdf's to postscript, txt and html, so you could use those respective viewers.

it doesnt look well maintained.

read the whole thread, I already tested it. fbpanel needs x, so it's entirely out of the question.

I dont think you get the point of this thread, and I technically dont either.
The idea was to work out a whole pile of text based command line tools that you could use and have a fully functioning system. I piped in with directfb because a majority of the time, when people are looking for a console based system, it's to avoid X. and imho, the internet is pretty damned hard to browse and use in a console based browser and I was lookin for a solution with directfb. I'm technically offtopic, but the forum advisors seemed to have deemed me on topic enough to not split my posts.
Anyway, my point is, we're not lookin for every possible framebuffer app here.

DirectFB, Xgl.. dont know, but we need more advanced engineering on GUI, vga card.
DirectFB is written in c++?

The idea is to make a text based system without x that looks good and functions well, handling modern computing so to speak.

Just for the record, am I the only one who thinks that GUIs should be kept the hell out of kernel space? :shock:

Everyone agrees. Putting there is a shocking idea.
and I'd chuck pebrot into this thing, great python text based msn client.

For a live cd version of something like this, how would one create a to-ram or similar command that basically puts the distro in memory so it runs faster?

so i got bored and decided to actually try a completely text system, fired up vmware and got installing, will eventually try to use larch on this. but at the moment i have (what'ch think):

Folks, remember what the core of such a setup would be...
Screen! It's your pal
Without a multiplexor, the command line is VERY limited. Single-tasking is... the bane of computing.

Probably because the original post mentioned it being a "light" system.
Emacs would be on my list though.
I'd also throw in Surfraw for accessing the Web.

What about a textmode windowmanager?
Twin is quite nice, but i have i have got it working only under x in a terminal until now... Maybe someone else checks this out...
Working versions of it are here, just take the latest:
http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/experimental/
-EDIT- Got it working on a vc with the --hw=tty option. It looks very nice, but i get a seqfault when pressing any key Under x its working perfect...
Here is a fast made PKGBUILD:
pkgname=twin
pkgver=0.5.1
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="Twin is a text mode windowing environment."
url="http://linuz.sns.it/~max/"
license="GPL"
depends=('gcc')
source=(http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/experimental/twin-0.5.1_4.tar.gz)
build() {
cd $startdir/src/twin-0.5.1+4
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-wm=yes --enable-tt=yes --enable-wm-rc=yes --enable-term=yes --enable-term-devpts=yes --enable-hw-tty=yes --enable-hw-tty-linux=yes --enable-hw-tty-twterm=yes --enable-hw-tty-termcap=yes --enable-hw-x11=yes --enable-hw-gfx=yes --enable-ext=yes
make || return 1
make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install

Is grass green? Do birds fly?
C-x 2 splits vert, C-x 3 splits horiz, C-x 1 back to single.
If you really wanted to, you could do everything in emacs. IRC, IM, web, email, news, media player, etc.
Offline
as a user of both, it's a helluva lot easier to use screen than emacs

And C-x 0 to delete the current window.
