[SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

I face a problem confuse me.

the arch linux  was installed yesterday. when I want to reboot it, I have to wait. so I test it on the text mode (ctr+alt+F4), it shows the information

a stop job is running for login service

the initial time is 90 seconds, however,  when it close to 90 seconds, it will increase the time.  so I have to wait for ever.

How are you attempting to reboot?

How are you logging in?

What is the output of:

loginctl session-status

EDIT: Please also describe your installation procedure in more detail.

Re: [SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

reboot:

1. enter a text mode by hiting ctrl+alt+F4
2. reboot

then

a stop job is running for login service

login

so I have to force poweroff by pressing power button

and boot it again

actually I am not clear what you want to know.

Yeah, that's fine, you enter `reboot` in the console and press return, right?

Open a terminal window and run this command:

journalctl -xf

Then attempt to reboot from the GNOME panel and post any terminal output that appears.
EDIT: Actually, are you using GNOME?

Please use code tags when posting terminal output.

Which guide did you follow when installing Arch?

Re: [SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

well, I installed arch linux in the virtualbox before.
this time, I installed it directly on my laptop.

I mainly followed the tutorial from the video.

That guide is nonsense and over a year old.

Go through the Beginner's Guide step by step and see what you have missed.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_guide

The `journalctl` output you have posted looks like you did not attempt to reboot after running the command -- why not?

EDIT: Please stop full-quoting my posts at the end of your replies, it is utterly pointless and makes the thread more difficult to read.

I tried to force to poweroff by ctr+alt+del (press them more than 7 times in 2 seconds)
it shows

failed to finalize file system, ignoring

when I check the Beginner's guide, I find a problem in the installation.

Re: [SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

Hello guys,

I am facing with the same problem since few days: "A stop job is running for Login Service" when I try to poweroff or reboot (from command line, I do not use any GUI to poweroff/reboot)
here is the output for loginctl session-status

Re: [SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

The dirty work-around is to log out from DE, log in to the tty2 (or anything else without starting X again) and then manually

shutdown now

or

reboot

thank you very much!

it is working.

systemctl isolate multi-users.target

reboot

then this problem was gone.

I still have a question, why it works?

Re: [SOLVED]a stop job is running for login service

If shutdown (whether it be to reboot or power-off) of your system gets stuck, first test if the kernel itself is able to reboot or power-off the machine forcedly using one of these commands

sync && reboot -f
sync && poweroff -f

If either one of the commands does not work, it is a kernel bug, not systemd.

But we are mentioned already that shutdown/reboot works fine when launched from tty2 or another tty and only fails when run somehow via desktop environment. So it's not a kernel bug...

PS: commands work but after boot I've met unclean disk partitions and fsck...

PPS: filed a bug

EDIT: the problem is solved with the 4.1.16-1-lts kernel
