Browser: none (GTK-Webcore devs: please, give us another release instead of keeping everything in CVS!)
Music player: MPD
Multimedia player: GXine (but the browser plugin is not so great )

Not sure if somebody already mentioned it - avidemux is very fast and responsive video editing tool.

Some other goodies (and shameless plugs):
mirage - http://theskyiscrape.com/scott/mirage.html
epdfview - http://www.emma-soft.com/projects/epdfview/
asunder - http://ericlathrop.com/asunder

Epdfview immediately has my support. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it belongs in the Extra repo.
Edit: same with Asunder.

pdfview needs printing support, besided that it's just awesome!
asunder has been a usefull program for quite some time now for me :>

Window Manager:
WindowMaker: It isn't the smallest but certainly fast.
Sweet, now I can play with myself.

My picks:
WM: icewm with good menu made with menumaker (or ratpoison)
fm: emelfm (or bash)
terminal: aterm
music: xmms (strangely uses fewest resources for me -- less then mpd, mpg321, cplay, mp3blaster, ... )
movie: mplayer
pdf: xpdf
mixer: alsamixer
editor: vim, nano and nedit
mail: muttng and sylpheed-claws
irc: irssi (or weechat)
ftp: lftp

word processor: abiword
graphics viewer: xzgv and feh
graph editors: xpaint and xfig
burning: graveman
ripping: abcde
network: nmap
....
I certainly like your set up, however for internet I like to use Conkeror for mouse independance. It's not very light and fast though.

Ok, let's make some official list, couse everybody writes his own favourite software.
Let's make voting for the best, light apps ever ^_^

Great idea, and we can make it illegal to use software not provided in the list!
Offline
That would make all Java software illegal, and probably most Mono and pyGTK stuff...

What about on the wiki? Under "light applications" or something like that...

On a more serious note. I think we need some more docs on the wiki about setting up more text mode type apps.

I have to add Transmission to this list.
Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end.
Transmission is open source (MIT license) and runs on Mac OS X (Cocoa interface), Linux/NetBSD/FreeBSD/OpenBSD (GTK+ interface) and BeOS (native interface).
It's in my repo (and the AUR, but the AUR version doesn't use GTK).

It's in your repo? Woo hoo! I haven't been able to get the damn thing to build with GTK...

just wandering what you guys use for firewall? Manually configure iptables?

Best LnF Music Player: xmms. Does it all, takes only minimal screen space. No play lists though
Runner Up 1: wxMusik. An iTunes look-a-like that provides a lot of functionality
Runner Up 2: gtkpod. Play music from (and manages) your iPod
How could you not mention mpd?
Best LnF CD Ripper: grip. An excellent, excellent package. You're probably using it now
Runner Up: ripperX
abcde is a very nice CLI ripper.
boo!

Yup (at least I do)

Wow, Transmission is really something... Fastest BT client I have ever seen. Definitely nets my approval.

my best small editor (if you dont let me count vim ) would be.... vi!
Sick bastard ...
Good as an "editor of last resort" though.
When you've *really* fscked up an install, you'd better know vi.

medit is a great alternative to gedit. Loads fast, syntax highlighting and tabs, and very nice. I've just ditched leafpad for it.
And I hear that it will be going into community (thanks to WillySilly, TU extraordinaire).

I have always said that emacs isn't an editor, its a way of life! If you don't understand, you haven't used it enough!
Agreed, it is worth to use.
I removed my sig, cause i select the flag, the flag often the target of enemy.
