Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

WM: Openbox

Terminal: urxvt

Archiver: xarchiver

Browser: none (GTK-Webcore devs: please, give us another release instead of keeping everything in CVS!)

Music player: MPD

Multimedia player: GXine (but the browser plugin is not so great sad )

PDF: none (xpdf has never worked well for me, Evince requires Gnome for some dumb reason)

Word processor: Abiword (has Gnome deps, but lighter than others)

Not sure if somebody already mentioned it - avidemux is very fast and responsive video editing tool.

Epdfview immediately has my support. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it belongs in the Extra repo.

Edit: same with Asunder.

I certainly like your set up, however for internet I like to use Conkeror for mouse independance.  It's not very light and fast though.

Great idea, and we can make it illegal to use software not provided in the list!

That would make all Java software illegal, and probably most Mono and pyGTK stuff... lol

What about on the wiki? Under "light applications" or something like that...

On a more serious note.  I think we need some more docs on the wiki about setting up more text mode type apps.

Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

I have to add Transmission to this list.

http://transmission.m0k.org/

Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end.

Transmission is open source (MIT license) and runs on Mac OS X (Cocoa interface), Linux/NetBSD/FreeBSD/OpenBSD (GTK+ interface) and BeOS (native interface).

It's in my repo (and the AUR, but the AUR version doesn't use GTK).

Man, only one or two mentions of MPD? Intigrate that with conky and add some mpc commands to my keys in fluxbox and who needs anything else?

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Best LnF Music Player: xmms. Does it all, takes only minimal screen space. No play lists though
Runner Up 1: wxMusik. An iTunes look-a-like that provides a lot of functionality
Runner Up 2: gtkpod. Play music from (and manages) your iPod

How could you not mention mpd?

Best LnF CD Ripper: grip. An excellent, excellent package. You're probably using it now
Runner Up: ripperX

abcde is a very nice CLI ripper.

medit is a great alternative to gedit. Loads fast, syntax highlighting and tabs, and very nice. I've just ditched leafpad for it.

And I hear that it will be going into community (thanks to WillySilly, TU extraordinaire).
