I'm trying to import an openvpn connection through NM.
This works fine in plasma but not in Gnome.
No clue what I'm doing wrong here. Does a private key need to be set? If so how?

In the past, the complaint from the software is the lack of "Private key"
If you add a private key to the certificate and then import it again with that, it may work for you.

I can't do that either, it feels like I'm missing a package or something obvious, but nothing is mentioned in the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME_Keyring page AFAIK.

Have you been able to make it work directly with openvpn? What I'm thinking is that you might actually be missing something or you might be using the wrong profile.
If you have an openvpn configuration file you can try to import it.

I have an ovpn file, running it from a terminal works. Running it in plasma works too. Just import it and hit ok.
Oh well, guess I'll give up on gnome

You could file a bug report upstream, otherwise it will never get fixed. On the other hand, if you have used easy-rsa to get your configuration going (just a guess judging by the file names), it should have generated a private key file for you to use.
Last time I've tried to import an ovpn file with all keys embedded it didn't do anything, I needed to change the opvn file to point to files instead.
