nvidia-304xx removes resolutions after package upgrade

I upgraded the nvidia-304xx package from 304.131-2.1 to 304.131-3 and all the resolutions except 640 x 480 got deleted.

By this I mean when I run the xrandr command on version 304.131-3, I get:

Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 640 x 480, maximum 640 x 480
default connected 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   640x480       73.00*

On version 304.131-2.1, I get:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 connected primary 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
   1280x1024     60.02*+  75.02
   1152x864      75.00
   1024x768      75.03    60.00
   800x600       75.00    60.32
   640x480       75.00    59.94

I have currently downgraded back to version 304.131-2.1, but since nvidia-304xx version 304.131-2.1 requires linux version 4.2.5-1. There are also other packages that require that linux version so I have currently ignored their package upgrades. The highest resolution that my monitor can support is 1280 x 1024, which is what I currently have after downgrading.

This is what I have ignored:

warning: acpi_call: ignoring package upgrade (1.1.0-36 => 1.1.0-37)
warning: linux: ignoring package upgrade (4.2.5-1 => 4.3.3-3)
warning: nvidia-304xx: ignoring package upgrade (304.131-2.1 => 304.131-3)
warning: tp_smapi: ignoring package upgrade (0.41-75 => 0.41-76)

I would like to use the latest packages if possible and would really appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you.

Re: nvidia-304xx removes resolutions after package upgrade

Since the kernel upgrade to 4.3 some people, including myself, cannot get X to work with the new nvidia-304xx and kernel 4.3.  There is a bug report about one issue but it is for testing repo and it seems to have migrated into non-testing.  Like others, the simplest thing to do for now is to switch to linux-lts and nvidia-304xx-lts.

Re: nvidia-304xx removes resolutions after package upgrade

I read somewhere that using linux-lts is a bad idea. I forgot where I read it or the reasoning behind it which is why I refrained from using it.

When I tried to install linux-lts and nvidia-304xx-lts without removing linux and nvidia-304xx, it did not have a package conflict. Should I keep both the normal and lts version or remove the normal before installing lts?

Also since the linux-lts version has a lower package version will I still be able to upgrade packages such as acpi_call and tp_smapi? These packages require linux version 4.3.

Re: nvidia-304xx removes resolutions after package upgrade

Both regular linux or nvidia-304xx and their lts versions can easily coexist side by side as they are called differently in your boot loader--see wiki.  I have kept regular linux kernel installed as I hope that future upgrade will fix the nvidia-304xx problem.  Your acpi_call and tp_smapi packages will still upgrade if you still have the regular kernel installed but I don't know if they will run properly while using lts --I don't use them myself.

Re: nvidia-304xx removes resolutions after package upgrade

Thank you very much. I found out that there are packages for acpi_call-lts and tp_smapi-lts so I installed those as well. Hopefully everything works without any issues.

EDIT: When I started using LTS, I wasn't able to connect to the Internet. What can I do to fix this?

Possibly start a new thread about issue.
please supply much more information to help solve the issue such as:
The type of network connection wired,wireless,virtual
The devices identifier from lspci -nn or lsusb depending on if its pci or usb
The driver that the interface is / was using
The source of that driver if not if was not part of the linux(-lts) package
The output of ip link
The output of dmesg
Post complete logs/output/versions/error messages
Edit:
spelling wired not wire
