Xorg will not start

Hi,

I Googled this question before I asked it and turned up this result https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=203424 but it was of no help to me. I also turned up several Arch Wiki articles which I read and tried to implement, which also didn't work. I am saying this in case someone is going to tell me to do my homework, or something along those lines, as I believe I have done it.

For some reason that escapes me, after having no issues with Xorg previously (I was able to run it without issue for about a fortnight on this same laptop) after I rebooted the last time it simply will not run. This surprises me especially seeing how no updates related to NVIDIA, my kernel, mesa, etc. had occurred since my last reboot. My Xorg.0.log file is here, I have tried switching my graphics driver from NVIDIA to nouveau, in the hope of an inexplicable miracle, then rebooted (after adding nouveau to the modules listed in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and regenerating the kernel image, which made no difference) but it made no difference. I also tried (when I was still using the NVIDIA driver) regenerating my xorg.conf file with nvidia-xconfig per the Wiki. Here is the output of lspci -k, the most relevant line to my graphics issues is likely:

01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208M [GeForce GT 740M] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 5019

if there is any more information I can provide to help ya help me with this issue just ask, as I am desperate to fix this issue.

Thanks for your time,
Brenton

Re: Xorg will not start

If it is at all relevant, I was experiencing some graphical bugs in certain applications before I rebooted, see atom issue #10714.

Re: Xorg will not start

Judging from the log file, the problem is related to

[ 131.367] (II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
[ 131.368] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia
[ 131.368] (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
[ 131.368] (II) Unloading nvidia
[ 131.368] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

I found a thread on nvidia devtalk where resources to solve this problem are provided (or at least, that's what op claims): https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … e-to-load/

As a side note: Editing your first post is the preferred way to include additional information.

Re: Xorg will not start

I assume, by sharing that link, that you mean I should reinstall nvidia, reboot and run modprobe nvidia if Xorg fails to launch? I ask because the link you shared is mostly just about NVIDIA on Ubuntu 14.04, not Arch Linux so most of the instructions there are specific to Ubuntu 14.04. They also shared two links to AskUbuntu and one of the instructions there involves update-alternatives which is not an available command on Arch Linux. I also separated the pieces of information into several different messages because in my experience, people tend to ignore comment edits, but they don't ignore new comments.

If that is what you suggesting I do, I'm afraid I just tried it and it failed.

Re: Xorg will not start

If it is somehow relevant and helpful, I have found running

nvidia-settings

is returning the error message:

Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
ERROR: The control display is undefined; please run `nvidia-settings --help` for usage information.

That statement is of no help to us.

Neither is this.

Read https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

You need to tell us *exactly* what you have tried and what the results were in order to prevent duplication of effort by those who attempt to help you.

I would comment on the presence of an Intel integrated card in your `lspci` output and perhaps link you to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus but maybe you have already tried this.

Re: Xorg will not start

Sorry. I didn't check into that.
I didn't think your issue would be resolved by modprobe as apparently the problem doesn't lie with the kernel module but rather with xorg itself. Having done some more searching it seems that most people seem to get things working by reinstalling the nvidia drivers. Now as Head_on_a_Stick pointed out, we definitely need more information about what exactly you have tried, maybe a list of the updated packages prior to when the problem started occurring might also prove helpful. As another blind shot: Have you tried reinstalling xorg?

Re: Xorg will not start

I did try the NVIDIA Optimus guide at the ArchWiki and in terms explained below "Xorg fails to start". What I have tried in exact detail is (or at least what I remember of it):

Installing Nouveau
Removing the NVIDIA driver, installing xf86-video-nouveau and xf86-video-intel, adding nouveau to the MODULES listed in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, running

mkinitcpio -p linux

, then rebooting. Note I started off with Bumblebee installed too, and bumblebeed.service enabled with systemd. This failed to correct the problem, that is, Xorg failed to start, I have the LightDM display manager enabled, all I see when "Xorg fails to start" (for future reference, as you want details and this is what happens whenever it fails...) is a black screen with a blinking underscore icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen.

Removing Nouveau
Removing xf86-video-nouveau, installing NVIDIA in its place again, removing "nouveau" from MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf, re-running

mkinitcpio -p linux

, running

nvidia-xconfig

to regenerate my xorg.conf file. Then I rebooted and Xorg failed to start.

Reinstall NVIDIA
Then I reinstalled NVIDIA with pacman, and ran modprobe nvidia, as per robg's suggestion

Reinstall Xorg
Then I removed xorg with

pacman -Rsc xorg

(which also removed several other packages, hence necessitating me mentioning them in the next pacman -S command) and reinstalled it with

pacman -S xorg sddm lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter plasma gnome gnome-extra deepin deepin-extra nvidia bumblebee

. Then I re-ran nvidia-xconfig.

I also added myself to the video group, groups fusion809 returns:

games video bumblebee wheel

What other details can I provide? I think I've told you everything now, although some things may have slipped through the cracks, after all I'm using a different computer to type on these forums so I don't have a log of all commands I've run in front of me.

EDIT:

I also tried modifying my xorg.conf file to that in the NVIDIA Optimus guide, namely:

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

this to makes no difference and Xorg fails to start.

Sounds like you need to disable KMS.

For an Optimus system, use these kernel parameters:

nomodeset i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0

Re: Xorg will not start

I'm using GRUB for my bootloader so that does mean I edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg (and I'm basing this on the Kernel parameters article at the ArchWiki) modifying the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0"? I've only been using Arch for a fortnight so please forgive my ignorance.

Re: Xorg will not start

You can add the parameters temporarily by pressing "e" with the Arch menu entry highlighted and adding them to the end of the line that starts with "linux", then press <Ctrl>+x (at the same time) to boot the modified entry.

If it works, edit /etc/default/grub and update grub.cfg, as per the ArchWiki.

Re: Xorg will not start

One other thing, not sure if it's related. While I'm at tty2 (the full-screen terminal started with Ctrl+Alt+F2, in case you are unsure as to what I mean) nano seems to have graphical glitches. See scrolling down a file in nano, some components of the previous page are displayed on the next page. Where the "next page" is opened whenever I scroll down to the bottom of the current page in nano. I hope this isn't too confusing I am trying my best to explain what I mean, but it's difficult to in just words.

Re: Xorg will not start

So it works. What is supposed to happen next in the chain? A DM?

Re: Xorg will not start

I would like to start a display manager, so I can login to my DE, preferably KDE Plasma 5. And no Xorg is not working, it's not starting, why do you think it is working? It was starting I would have closed this thread by now.

Re: Xorg will not start

Your Xorg log says this:

[ 580.873] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

This means X started, and terminated successfully because you didn't give it anything to do. It's working.

What is in your ~/.xinitrc file?

Have you done anything to actually make that happen?

Re: Xorg will not start

@ jasonwryan, yeah I have LightDM installed and enabled with systemd. @2manydogs My .xinitrc file is non-existent, I thought it had to be in order to launch a DM.

Re: Xorg will not start

So what does the journal report for the DM then?

Please make more of an effort to diagnose this by yourself, rather than passively relying on the community to hand hold you through what is a very basic process.

Re: Xorg will not start

@jasonwryan a little common courtesy wouldn't hurt, you don't see what I am doing behind the scenes, I have been trying to diagnose the problem myself since it started, five hours ago. I only report a small amount of it, as I can't copy any of the output I am getting, or the contents of the files I generate (as I am stuck at tty2, with no clipboard), rather I have to copy them across using paste bins. I have also just experienced a wifi problem so now I can't even copy using pastebins anymore. How do I show the journal report? Guessing journalctl -xe?
