Driver for Realtek RTL8188CUS USB WLAN adapter

I'm trying to get a nano USB WLAN adapter to work on ArchLinux. The chip is Realtek RTL8188CUS.

The device is recognized by 'lsusb', and I can also see it with 'ip link' or 'iw dev', but I can't connect to any network using Network Manager. After a quick search I tried to install the package '8192cu-dkms' that should install the proper driver but I get the following error:

Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 4.1.4-1-ARCH cannot be found at
/usr/lib/modules/4.1.4-1-ARCH/build or /usr/lib/modules/4.1.4-1-ARCH/source.
modprobe: WARNING: Module 8192cu not found.
error: command failed to execute correctly

On the official website here they say the official driver is supported until kernel 3.9, and the kernel driver is not working properly. Is there a workaround for kernel 4.1?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Driver for Realtek RTL8188CUS USB WLAN adapter

Hi, I'm having a hard time trying to solve this one by myself. After installing the dkms driver I actually realized that the device was no longer listed in 'iw dev' or 'ip addr' so I removed it, and it was back again. I also opened a thread in the Italian forum and I've been told to switch from NetworkManager to WICD.
The device is recognized, but when I try to connect to my wireless network it fails at the authentication phase. WICD says 'Authentication failed: bad password', but of course the WPA passphrase is correct.

It seems that the driver is malfunctioning.

Another solution proposed was to use the Windows driver by installing the package ndiswrapper-dkms. I did install it, but which command do I use to load the appropriate driver? Thanks.

Re: Driver for Realtek RTL8188CUS USB WLAN adapter

Last update: after a few days I tried to plug in the adapter. It connected to the network and I can actually navigate. I did not update any package in the meantime and I did not change any network configuration. The last thing I did was installing ndiswrapper-dkms, but I did not execute any command to load the driver since I didn't know what to do, and I recall that the device didn't connect after that either. Mistery?

The only weird behaviour is the signal strength: it jumps from 40% (the wicd signal strenght bar turns orange) to 80% and then back to 40%. I ran a speedtest and the download speed is 2.2 Mbps, while my usual value is ~7 Mbps.

Re: Driver for Realtek RTL8188CUS USB WLAN adapter

Did you manage to install 8192cu-dkms in the end?
I'm having exacty the same problem with this adapter.
